Late and boring comment re: being a registered independent. It varies by state. If voter registration has a party affiliation component, there is always an independent/unaffiliated option, but Texas has no such party registration at all. In New Hampshire, an unaffiliated voter can ask for either party ballot on primary day. You technically become registered with that party, then sign a sheet on the way out to return to unaffiliated. Since Judge Judy is in California, which does a jungle primary where candidates from both parties are on the same ballot, party registration probably doesn't matter all that much.
