When our politicians fail us, can journalism save us? We revisit George Clooney's GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK (2005), about Edward R. Murrow's battle with Joseph McCarthy, and get a lesson in how the liberal imagination remembers the Red Scare. PLUS: the rise of A.I. in the arts, and the state of the centre-left in Europe.

This episode made me realise that you guys need to do an episode on The Majestic, starring Jim Carrey in a dramatic role as a blacklisted 1950s screenwriter who gets amnesia from a car crash in a small town and is mistaken for a local who went MIA in WW2. If that isn't enough to sell you, know that Roger Ebert gave it three and a half stars

If Reform and the Tories form a coalition, I’m calling the U.S. election for Trump. (I was leaning that way already but that victory would seal the deal lol)

I hope Michael & Us is soon sponsored by aluminum

"Can you give me Harold Laski's email address?" is gold.

Looking forward to the day when I can use AI to generate an episode of Michael and US where the boys have enthusiastic praise for Alexander Pelosi's ouevre.

This episode inspires me to give a broad update from the Pod Saveverse. You guys have been very on point about the perspective from this particular subtype of liberal. They've been boosting The Bulwark (the Never-Trump successor to The Weekly Standard) a lot, to the point of having some of their members on to cohost episodes. This includes Sarah Longwell (who runs The Focus Group podcast) and Tim Miller (whom Crooked Media fired for antisemitism in 2018, but have since welcomed back into the fold). Whether it's Gaza, inflation, or the border, the Pod Save hosts argue there's nothing else to be done amid some solemn shaking of heads. But also Biden is an objectively outstanding President, which the American people would realize if they only knew about his record! I really feel for earnest liberals and progressives who listen to this show, because the ongoing message is mainly one of learned helplessness. The policies can be no better than they are now. However, you can sign up for the Anxiety Relief Program, which collects montly donations and divvies them up among campaigns and activist groups. And hey, if that doesn't work, they have a promo code for BetterHelp! Oh, and Jon Lovett is on this season of Survivor.

In an early Q&A, someone asked for Michael and Us's principles. Luke said he preferred the audience to discover them gradually through the discussions. For anyone wondering, this episode perfectly showcases what M&U stands for.

Ray Wise was also awesome albeit in a smaller roll in Verhoeven's Robocop. I need to check out them God's Not Dead Films. Ha ha. Excellent episode gents.
