Kuruk's backstory is from the novels. Though in the original lore he specifically didn't want to tell anyone about his troubles, while here I guess they had him openly talk about it because only the past avatars really know his true story. It is true that he was a more carefree type, but it later got a much darker context and got more out of hand because he was drinking, challenging people and sleeping with women to distract himself because he was in so much pain.
