Came across this on discord and though it would be useful to share.  Free tools are a huge help when starting out.  They can also help you get to the point of commissions and crowd funding where you can roll that money back into your craft by purchasing the more commonly used / extensive tools.

These days Blender is a powerhouse in the realm of free software.  You can box model, which is great for starting out and rapid prototyping.   You can paint directly on models, sculpt with a similar workflow to Z brush, animate instead of Maya, video production as an alternative to Premiere, simulate particles and physics in place or Houdini.  Do post-processing, VR, 2d animation and on and on.

Here are a few other highlights from the list

  • Photopea is a great online-based photoshop alternative.  The layout is an identical clone of earlier versions of photoshop.  It's surprising they can get away with it.
  • Kdenlive is a great free video editing tool; TimPossible uses it for his videos and sound design.
  • Davinci Resolve has some great tools in its free version for node-based color correcting and grading, but beyond the basics, you'll hit the wall between free and paid pretty quick.
  • Audacity is great for light audio work, like clean up, clipping, converting and ever recording for like podcast.

A couple that didn't make this list that I use frequently are Handbrake for nearly lossless video compression, Fastone Image Viewer for basic image editing like cropping, resizing and image management and Honeyview for single and bulk image converting.
