Yo, Teacups! Sometimes I feel like I stay caught in a cycle of the same movies, books, activities, and whatever else. If you suffer from this, I hope this small collection of recommendations can be of some help.

P.S. These are obviously just things I like and if you don’t like them too, then that’s absolutely a-okay ❤️

TV Shows/Movies:

  • It’s a Sin. Oh lord! Boys, grab those tissues, we’re gonna need ‘em. If you like falling in love with loveable outcasts and then getting your heart broken by them, this is for you. It’s a Sin is a beautiful and haunting story that takes place during the outbreak of the 1980’s aids crisis. Prepare to feel, smile, get your heart ripped out and mostly just be so pleased you now know more about this unforgettable time.
  • The Great. Sass, debauchery and lots and lots of horse fucking jokes - The Great is the reimagined tale of Catherine the Great’s rise to power. Follow Catherine as she mind-fucks her husband, discovers the joys of power and sex, all the while trying to improve the political, social, and even moral standing of Russia.
  • Ready or Not. Spooktober may be over, but action-packed horror movies never go out of style. If you like thrills, ladies that kick ass, and murdering rich people who wanna sacrifice you to the devil - you’ll love this. Root for Grace as she outwits coke-heads, punches sociopathic children, and most importantly ditches her trash husband (who absolutely should have told her that his family worships the devil BEFORE they got married).
  • The Sword in the Stone. A very underrated and charming Disney film. Very simple, very wholesome, beautiful backdrops, and really memorable, funny VoiceOver work. I highly recommend this for when you’re in the mood for something gentle and silly. P.S. If I were a Disney princess, I’d 100% be Merlin. I am grouchy, well-intentioned, and always in need of modern conveniences.
  • The Sopranos. What can I say except… it’s perfect. Seriously, this TV show is one of the most compelling and downright entertaining things I’ve ever watched. If you like content that allows you to both enjoy and examine its main theme, you know you’re onto a winner. Follow a band of sociopaths as they cheat, kill, take their kids to soccer practise, and squeeze in a therapy session before dinner. P.S. This show will make you crave pasta in a way you never thought possible. Make sure you eat whilst you watch. It’s the only way :)

Songs:

  • You’re So Vain - Carly Simon (a great one for getting your sass on. Grab a wine glass or a hairbrush and sass the shit out of yourself or whomever you got beef with).
  • The Queen of White Lies - The Orion Experience (I just like it. It’s not that deep ;))
  • Soldier, Poet, King - The Oh Hellos (peaceful, hopeful, uplifting - for wholesome/productive times)
  • Wonderful Life - Smith & Burrows (you wanna think about your life, your family, your rights and wrongs? Put this on and go for it)
  • Meet Me in the Woods - Lord Huron (romanticise the shit out of your life because god damn it it’s fun and harmless and everyone deserves to feel good about their story)
  • Bitch - Ruby Amanfu (wanna cry and think about the complexity of women? SAME)
  • Doin’ Time - Lana Del Rey (murderous lady vibes are here all day long in this house)
  • Hammer to Fall - Queen (for “yes, the world’s on fire, but at least we’re not cold” days)
  • Inferno. Pt.2 - The Buttress (for channelling your inner demons and getting out your anger in healthy ways - i.e. listening to angry music, not shouting at or beating actual people)
  • Not About You - Haiku Hands (angry, but working-on-it women are a theme here)
  • Baba O’Riley - The Who (the intro alone will make you wanna declare “I’M GOING ON AN ADVENTURE)

Books:

  • I would recommend some books, but lately I’ve just been reading a ton of smutty fan fiction and it’s made me very happy. I recommend you read whatever the hell you want. Snobbery of any kind is just cringe, absolutely including reading snobbery. If you wanna read about Naruto and Sasuke fucking each other, you do that. We’re all gonna die eventually, please don’t be the fucking guy who tries to make downtime into a competition. Nobody cares. Nobody. Just focus on you and be fucking happy :)

Activities:

  • Go for a walk. Five minutes, 10 minutes, 7.5 minutes. It doesn’t matter. Fresh air is good for us all. Fitness doesn’t have to be your passion, it certainly isn’t mine, but going outside and feeling something other than stagnant air can make a difference. It’s not a cure all, but it is something.
  • Bake something really simple. I didn’t even “bake” in the technical sense the other day. I made Rocky Road which is essentially just melting chocolate, bashing biscuits, and throwing in a ton of nuts, fruit and marshmallows. It was fun, messy and it just took my mind off work and family troubles. Things do not have to be “complicated” or “challenging” in order to be worthwhile. Do things that make you feel good, not things you think other people will be impressed by.
  • Give your loved ones gifts. I appreciate that everyone has different financial situations, and I am here for handmade, really simple goodhearted shit. In fact that often just means so much more. Like I said, I made Rocky Road the other day and I just sliced it up into sections and took it to my family. We have the power to make people feel cared for and thought of, no matter who we are. Also, I’ve found it’s the non-occasions, a completely ordinary, rainy Tuesday evening that makes for a perfect, impromptu surprise. The occasion is that we care for each other and want to make each other feel good.

And that’s my offering for the month. I hope some of this can lead to a good time for you. I truly do.

Best wishes,

Tea

Savage Dragon

A woman after my own heart. Baba O’Riley is a goddamn banger! XX

Blindluck92

I love The Sword in the Stone! Wow, nostalgia check, now I gotta go watch it again. Thanks for that and the rest of the suggestions, Tea.

Iron Piedmont

I'll keep these movies in mind.. Some movies I reccomend in return include The Invisible Man (1933), Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Truman (1995), Goodbye Lenin, Falling Down, and The King's Speech.

J.T. Packer

I'd recommend starting the 'Wheel of Time' novel series before touching the TV series that Amazon will surely ruin.

Praetorianliege

The bit about walking is legitimate facts.

Erin McLean

It still bothers me to this day that the Wizards duel in Sword and the Stone isn't considered one of the best anime battles of all time.

There's a series on YouTube I've been raving about to... Well... Anyone who will listen to it. It's called Helluva Boss. Comedy with some cool themes in each episode and it's free because, well, YouTube.

Jeremy Knight

I've always heard about the Sopranos but I've never watched it. I've fell so out of movies and tv over the years that only stuff like the Chucky tv series and the newly announced She Hulk series made me kinda care about tv again. As for what I read I'm always reading about Lady Dimitrescu on Archive of Our Own. Ranging from smut that inspired me to write erotic scripts about her for both male and female listeners to reading really good stories where Lady D and her daughters are very fucking scary or really sweet.

If you like shonin anime, or action packed, heart wrenching, inspirational, anime and you're stuck in the Cycle of rewatching shows and need something to watch... I recommend naruto and naruto shippuden. Ik ik its 800 episodes, but you dont have to watch the filler. And the fans can be pretty annoying but just watch it if you're into shonin anime or even if you just like thrilling and emotional shows. Use naruspot.tv to watch naruto shippuden it's free to use. If you end up not liking it then that's alright you do you, but just try it out :)

I have a recommendation that for some reason I’ve been researching on the film itself and the making of it lately, the 1932 film Freaks. While classified as a horror movie with the ending as the main reason for it, Freaks is more of a dramatic, slice of life, tragic story that tells that despite your disabilities, you are just as human and an enabled person, and sometimes those enabled people are the real monsters. It also shows that when a group of good people are pushed too far, they become the very thing they don’t want to be seen as.

The Jolly Dane

If anyone else don't know where to find great, new books, I recently discovered an author named Brandon Sanderson, who is super active and puts out tons of amazing novels, he is absolutely worth checking out

Ayy glad to hear there are other Sword in the Stone enjoyers out there. People seem to really hate that movie, and I can't figure out why. It's delightful.

Dethos

Thank you for these recommendations! There's a lot on the media side you mentioned that I have not experienced yet. It's fun to venture out of familiar territory.

The Sopranos is the best TV show ever made.

JsMaster

Oh man, The Sword in the Stone is such a classic. For anyone who hasn’t seen that, I implore you to use a couple weeks free of Disney + to check that out.

I may or may not have listened to all of The Orion Experience's albums in a row this afternoon, thanks for the recommendation! That just blew my mind away

I also recommend King Arthur on Netflix if you like Sword in the Stone
