So at present I'm busy with a longfic involving Karla Sofen. It's hard, because I feel like most of her current canon derives from Ellis's Thunderbolts, and there she's written as basically a more openly evil Emma Frost, Emma Frost 2.0, and I don't want to just do her as another Emma. I want there to be a palpable difference between the two characterizations.

How I'm rationalizing it is that Emma, as the Hannibal show put it, is like a cat. She fears indignity more than death. So there's a consistent poise, a consistent sarcasm. Karla is more like Gone Girl (you remember, the character Rosamund Pike played, Mary Gonegirl?). She is absolutely craven when it comes to protecting her own life, but equally venal when she's assured of her own success. So less of a threat than Emma, who has a tendency for megalomania, but more of an asshole. But, conveniently, also bisexual and promiscuous.
