One thing you have to understand about being a writer--two things, actually--is one, an idea is very rarely fully formed. Usually it congeals with several other ideas, equally small, until you actually have something. Big thing about Luke Skywalker, he's Darth Vader's son. That wasn't even in the first draft. He was just, you know, a guy. Second thing is that ideas are well smaller than you think. They can be more like whims. Just anything that strikes you and that you haven't done before. So around when Karen Gillan shaved her head to play Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy, I thought 'I've never written a bald female character, that could be interesting' and shoved it into the back of my head for proper disposal later on...
