These recap videos provide way more information than is necessary to appreciate GOW(2018), but they give you a good sense of who Kratos is. The VA for Kratos in GOW (2018) changed and is much better than the first VA.

its crazy how mature and tragic the story of those games where, yet most of us played them as kids lol. Considering that some youtubers don't even know of the story or know very little and they still enjoyed the games, this should you give you enough background story to understand what kind of character kratos is/was.

It's so good you do this before diving into the 2018 game, a lot of people/game journalists think that Kratos only now became a good character, and has matured/grown up/etc. Truth is, Kratos was always a tragic character, and the old games were filled with incredible story telling

I almost want to recommend watching some combat and particularly boss fights for contrast's sake, there is so much to appreciate (despite some obvious shortcomings) for a 2005. GoW1 might look a bit crusty these days, but the visual storytelling, the insane QTE-heavy, very bespoke boss combat... man, it was good and just kept improving until GoW3. People did many concepts so wrong with some of the later criticisms, especially A) it's not very mature and Kratos is just angry - which partly can be true but is definitely explained along the way and attenuated quite nicely B) how QTEs are bad game design when God of War showed how to not only make it work, but enhance the experience. The sense of agency when slitting open some creature's belly or pressing L3 + R3 to gouge out a certain someone's eyeballs, which is particularly great because you came to associate it with rage mode... it is off the charts. Just really well-thought-out stuff with a nice bag of QC oversight leading to slightly frustrating moments. It was 2005 after all! It definitely is worth playing, it holds up well and is every bit as good as GoW 2018, which in turn is fantastic but also forgot some of what made the original franchise great. I get not trying to fill a year's worth of content with just one game title, but if Brandon finds some time for himself (ha), there is lots to appreciate about a nice romp at lower difficulties. Also titties.
