FYI, they did indeed perform and write all the music. Both Guest and McKean are talented musicians known for doing parodies of different genres. Harry Shearer (the bass player) is of course a long time voice actor on The Simpsons (many different roles). None of the three main actors is British, except for Guest who is half British, half American. It was probably hard to see, but their original drummer--the blond one with the glasses--is Ed Begley Jr., who plays lawyer Clifford Main on Better Call Saul. The whole thing was improvised. They filmed something like 70 hours and cut it down to two using the funniest material.

I noticed the Ed Begley Jr connection! “The Gawkey guy with glasses. Good drummer, great look!”"…………. I was gonna mention it, but no one ever notices my posts so I figured why bother.

They created backstories for the characters and an outline for the overall story and situations, but the dialog is all improvised and made up on the spot. You can see them riffing off each other in the group interview scenes. And of course, the songs were not improvised, but written and rehearsed. :-)
