When Eladio killed Max in BB he said to Gus "The only reason you're alive and he's not, is because I know who you are." It is also made known at some point that Gus emigrated in 1986. In real life, there was an attempted assassination against Chilean President Augusto Pinochet in 1986. I've seen it theorized on Reddit and other forums that Gus was possibly a high ranking member of the Pinochet administration. Evidently Pinochet was dubbed a frightening leader that even made a drug lord (Eladio) second guess the killing of one of his possible henchmen.
