Side note: I know you enjoy seeing The Gang in other projects.... I don't think I've ever seen anyone suggest it to you, but Glenn starred in a movie called 'Coffee Town' back in ~2013. Should toss it in a poll at some point.

I didn’t notice it until I rewatched it this time, but the name Stussy on the toilet is significant because that’s where Thaddeus gets the idea to change his name to Enis Stussy

Robert Ballard

The LA scenes have a weird blend of The Big Lebowski and Barton Fink going on in terms of tone, music, and set design. The shot towards the end of Gloria sitting on the beach, however, is a very overt nod to the end of Barton Fink. It's pretty much the exact same pose.

One thing you didn't seem to notice is that the characters in the animation were all voiced by the actors in the show. Also, fact v fiction (aka story v truth) is a huge theme in this season.

this is by far one of my favorite episodes

Right. I noticed when I first watched it. Basically, Thad has just committed a crime, changes his name to Ennis Stussy (getting the idea from the label on the toilet), and flees to Minnesota. Also notice that the name on the toilet is actually Dennis, but the label didn't get stamped right at the factory so the D is missing. He basically spends the rest of his life as a fugitive in hiding. I guess he must have told Gloria his real name at some point, but not why he changed it.

Great reaction! Wanted to just comment on how this episode in particular continues a lot of the existential themes of the show. This whole episode didn't matter in terms of the plot this season. The trip to LA didn't matter, and didn't result in any leads for the case. Howard mentions during the visit that he used to believe the connections we make mattered, but now he doesn't think so. Just like how Gloria's trip didn't matter. This connects to the android seen in the animation sections always saying "I can help", despite their attempts they cannot change anything and are left merely as an observer. Just like Gloria is left to observe the past of Thaddeus, it's just a story. This connects to the box with the switch, which is known on the internet as a "useless machine". It serves no purpose, but just continues to flip the switch. This connects all the way back to season 2 where they talk about Albert Camus' essay/book "The Myth of Sisyphus". Despite this episode not being plot relevant, it is one of my favorite episodes for how much it puts the show's existential philosophy at the forefront.
