You should watch Midnight Run, it's sort of in the same tone as this movie, plus DeNiro is in it.

Great reaction Brandon, glad you enjoyed it so much. Definitely my favourite Candy role, maybe also my favourite Martin as well, though Parenthood is up there, but I think the chemistry between both these is too good. As far as Hughes is concerned, I don't think I've seen a bad film of his and though I'm very fond of the Lampoon films, The Breakfast club, Uncle Buck and Home alone, this one might also be my favourite. Keep up the great reactions mate. You may have missed the woman at the car rental desk (Edie McClurg) who played Grace, Principal Rooney's secretary in Bueller. The second motel clerk you thought you recognised was Martin Ferrero, perhaps you remembered him from Jurassic Park https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5Co3A3fLBo&t=110s A memerable scene if ever there was one!

Hmm I am having a hard time finding a copy of this movie. I've seen it before but now it's hard to find.

that was the first Robert De Niro movie I ever saw. I knew Charles Grodin from Seems Like Old Times and The Great Muppet Caper.

it's funny how Hughes didn't direct some of his biggest films, like the Vacations and Home Alone, with Columbus being responsible for Home Alone and Christmas Vacation... a truly underrated collaboration

That creepy Owen guy with the truck and the wife has been in a ton of movies since then: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0048414/

This is one of my mom's favorite movies, so I've seen a couple bits and pieces but never the whole thing until now. I really enjoyed it as well!

Why is Dutch not on the Thanksgiving classics list. This is a highly underrated John Hughes Thanksgiving movie classic. A road trip movie like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles that never gets any notice.

"I want a f**king car, right... f**king.... now". I used to have that whole scene memorized from the second he steps up to the desk til the lady goes, "You're f**ked". 🤣

Also, you asked about how much of the dialogue was adlibbed. Probably the only stuff adlibbed was on John Candy's end. John Hughes hated actors changing his lines. He and Candy were close friends and he loved Candy's sense of humor, Candy was the only person he ever allowed to adlib in his films. Whether he directed them or not. In fact, all of Candy's lines in Home Alone were adlibs. Hughes was always on hand during the filming of his movies, he cared that much about his scripts.
