This is definitely one of my favorite films. I was actually fortunate to have watched the US premiere of it. In college I took a class called Deconstructing the Samurai where we read about both the historical and fictional descriptions of samurai including some films and this was one of them. Edward Zwick was kind enough to premier this film for our class and give a talk about what went into making it, the reception when it was screened in Japan (which was very positive), etc. Every time I watch it I catch some new bits of the score or filmmaking or acting that makes me enjoy it even more so I'm glad you got to experience it.
