The Incubus System Chapter 688. Elenna's Curiosity II
Elenna’s PoV
Elenna's eyes narrowed as she watched the video, her mind racing with thoughts and theories. Her assistant stood beside her, waiting for an answer to his question.
"I don't think so," she finally said, her voice low and thoughtful. Her gaze remained fixed on the screen in front of her.
"What do you mean?" the assistant asked, his confusion evident.
Elenna's lips twisted into a small smile as she turned to face him. "The great demon," she said, her voice heavy with significance. "I don't think he kills innocent humans."
The assistant's eyes widened in surprise. "What? Why not?" he asked, his curiosity piqued.
"Because he had many chances to do it, yet he didn't," she said, her words dripping with meaning. It was only her guess after she analyzed what the great demon had been doing all along. Including this robbery case. She was sure the demon was the one who killed the robbers.
Her assistant looked at her in disbelief. "Please don't say that you think he's a demon who acts like a superhero," he said, his voice half whining.
Elenna pouted and turned to him; her eyes narrowed. "Isn't that what he showed to us?" she claimed, her voice rising in indignation.
Her assistant looked at her skeptically. "But demons are supposed to be evil, right?" he said, his tone questioning.
She knew he was right, but something inside her just wouldn't let it go. She couldn't shake the feeling that the great demon was different from the others, that he had a higher purpose, a greater mission.
"So it doesn’t mean he's on our side," her assistant reminded her, his voice tinged with concern. "He couldn't have come here aimlessly or just to save humanity. If he has such a noble goal, he should be cooperating with the demon hunters, not acting alone like this."
Elenna scowled at him. "But he could have done it because he doesn't like working with humans," she retorted, her voice rising in frustration. "I mean, it might offend his pride."
Her assistant shook his head in disbelief. "Please, boss," he pleaded. "Whichever it is, it's very dangerous. He is a demon and a demon eats humans. So please value your life a bit."
Elenna could only press her lips together, her mind racing with thoughts and possibilities. She knew what her assistant said was true, but she couldn't help feeling drawn to the great demon, to his mysterious powers and his strange, almost otherworldly presence.
Due to her silence, the assistant gasped, his hand covering his mouth in horror. "Wait...don't tell me you've entered that strange cult," he said, his voice tinged with concern.
She turned to him, her eyes blazing with indignation. "What cult?" she asked, her voice rising in curiosity.
"The great demon's cult," her assistant replied, his voice heavy with dread. "It is a new cult that has just become popular recently. That's all over the internet. It started from the demon's victim forum. People who believe that the great demon is their savior. They gathered and created a secret cult to worship the great demon like their God. The government hasn't said anything since this cult's existence is still a secret. Some said it's true, some simply denied it."
Elenna's frown deepened as she tried to wrap her head around the concept. It was unfathomable, yet there it was, a cult that had sprung up seemingly out of nowhere, with the great demon at its center.
"So, some people consider the great demon as a god now?" she said in disbelief.
The assistant nodded gravely, his expression serious. "Yes. It's a disturbing trend, and one that has been gaining traction lately."
Elenna couldn't believe what she was hearing. Had the world gone mad? Was this what happened when people lost faith in traditional religions? They turned to demons for salvation?
Then her assistant's accusatory tone caught her off guard, and she bristled at the insinuation. "You don't know about it or you're just pretending?" he demanded, his eyes narrowed.
"I haven't touched any files related to demons for the past three months, remember? How do I know about this?" she retorted, feeling frustrated that she had missed out on something that was clearly so important because she had been trying to follow the advice of her therapist, who had recommended that she stay away from information about demons for a while. But now she felt left out of the loop.
Her assistant breathed a sigh of relief, his shoulders relaxing. "Then that's better," he said, his voice heavy with relief.
Elena's brows furrowed in annoyance as she let out a frustrated sigh. "No!" she exclaimed, the word bursting from her lips like a cannonball. "That's worse than I thought. I didn't even know about hot news like this," she complained, her voice heavy with disappointment.
The assistant muttered under his breath, "I should have shut my mouth." His regret was palpable, almost tangible in the air around them. He knew he had messed up, and now he was paying the price for it.
For some inexplicable reason, a sense of foreboding washed over him. He felt as though something terrible was about to happen, something he couldn't control or escape. And he was right.
A tap on his shoulder startled him out of his thoughts. He turned to face Elena, her expression an enigmatic mix of curiosity and amusement. A smirk played at the corners of her lips as she regarded him with a knowing glint in her eye. "So… What do you know about this?" she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
He swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry. He cringed, shrinking away from her as if she was about to strike him. "Aren't you curious about the great demon?" he tried to negotiate, desperation creeping into his voice. "How about investigating him instead? After all, this cult could never have existed..."
But Elenna was having none of it. She was a woman on a mission, driven by an unrelenting thirst for knowledge. She knew that this cult had something to do with the great demon, and she was determined to uncover every last detail about it. "This cult has something to do with the great demon, so I want to know everything about it," she declared, her voice as sharp as a razor. "So... tell all you know about it..."
The assistant's shoulders slumped, and he let out a sob, his tears flowing freely down his cheeks. "Me and my big mouth..." he muttered, his words barely audible over his sobs.
