Asking how to start fate is just gonna cause a shit storm of people thinking their way is right (if anime only). You can start with fate zero just fine. You can start with fate stay night unlimited bladeworks just fine. Both spoil eachother so it doesn't matter (and you won't even likely know what you got spoiled about). Everything else is basically spinoffs. I personally started with zero and then watched fate stay night unlimited bladeworks, and then went down the rabbit hole and watched everything else available. My personal opinion if you are going to anime only it, is fate zero, then fate stay night unlimited bladeworks, then the 3 fate stay night heaven's feel movies.

For some context, the main premise of the fate series is a battle royale for the Holy grail between chosen mages. Each mage sucking a heroic spirit from the past (hence why they showed all those historic looking images in the ending) to fight on their behalf in the holy grail war. Definitely a must watch series

2021-11-27 00:30:09 I watched Fate in a weird order FSN -> FSN UBW -> Fate Zero ( cant recommend this order). I would recommend : Fate/Zero -> FSN UBW -> FSN Heavens Feel (and skip the OG Fate Stay Night)

Seeing these, I forgot how good fate/zero was. Personally, I started with zero back then. That's when I was starting to get into anime and went by Myanimelist ratings, Fate/zero was up there among the highest rated. The first couple episodes confused the living crap out of me and I almost dropped it (a lot of characters, the premise and terms used were like ????), but once you get into the setting and understand what it is about, it's really fucking good.

I'd be more reserved with this, like unless he explicitly asks for it, I wouldn't explain the premise of the show. He would have looked it up on myanimelist if he wanted to know it, but I assume he wants to go with no knowledge into the show.
