Even though Rinnegan completely broke all the rules of power scaling in this show, I still love the design. 6 Paths of Pain just like Sage of 6 Paths, I like the whole build up with the myth of the godlike sage and how the child of prophecy was supposed to be his reincarnation. The whole idea is cool especially how they slowly reveal all 6 paths, they look cool in Akatsuki outfit, their abilities are godlike and Pain's chanting theme is even more divine. It's clear that Kishomoto and creators were going for an all around godlike design and they delivered. Plus the teacher-student dynamic is something I always enjoyed like Obi-Wan vs Anakin, Dumbledore vs Voldemort and many others.

I'd argue that it was the Mangekyo that did that to the series. Itachi's Tsukuyomi was still pretty acceptable since it was still a genjutsu at its core-albeit an incredibly powerful one- but as soon as Kakashi started warping space-time with his eyeball and was able to one-shot a Kage-level ninja like Deidara the power ceiling started crumbling.
