That scene is to let us know rasengan is stronger than chidori. Naruto said he wanted to check if Sasuke was trying to go all out with that rasengan. Although they don't spell it out, these kids already are very good at putting out jutsu and power so they know the amount of power there is in a jutsu. Sasuke knew Naruto was able to counter and negate his full power chidori with that rasengan. And as you said, this is an amped version of Sasuke who was able to reach Naruto's base level after he cooked in that barrel lol Also, Naruto was so sad and disheartened after realizing Sasuke tried to kill him with it, he stood there and had that conversation without talking, while blows were being exchanged. Sasuke said when 2 high level shinobi exchange blows they can read each other's hearts, not sure if you missed that part. That's going to be an important way of communicating going forward in the middle of battles. And Naruto stood there and let Sasuke stab him through the chest, he didn't move or block it or counterattacked. He just moved Sasuke's hand away from his heart but allowed him to hurt him, which is very sad. But now he's mad and shit is about to hit the fan ;) this is such a complicated situation.
