Really impressed at how consistent these updates are

Appreciate the updates, especially with new models, anime 4k works best for even 3d using 0.40 for color push and gradient, try it...anyways, thank you for giving me a reason to continue to donate

Pls help. Im trying to upscale an old dvd which has 16:9 but cropped down to 4:3. So it has 16:9 image but with black borders on all sides. The "keep aspect ratio by expanding" doesnt remove anything.

thats likely because the padding was added as black pixels.. the software doesnt distinguish it most likely. i dont know if this'd be an option for you, but if you have windows 10 or 11, if you make a video project in the Photos app and add that video as the source, you can tell it to remove the black bars in one of the settings. it's a little hit and miss. other issues is that it will export as 30FPS and ive found no way to stop that. itll also re-encode it to something stupid, probably. maybe ffmpeg might have a crop option.

The comment above by Miles Presley is the right answer. Those black border were black pixels and currently Waifu2x-extension-gui can't just automatically remove those pixels for you. I will see if I can do a "remove black borders" feature, I will add this to my to-do list.

just gonna add a story to this particular comment: i used these settings for a 23 minute long 30 FPS video that was 4:3 ratio (720px high). was doing a x2. no interpolate. (1440 output) 2D anime video. using RAM cache and an nvidia 1080 ti (11GiB VRAM), 12 core processor at 3.6 GHz. only took an hour and 10 minutes. came out PERFECT. my only question (mostly for aaron) is regarding CPU usage. it appeared to only use the CPU for the upscaling. i have GPU MODE set to [ON}, but idk if it was working. maybe i have something else wrong. thanks to both!

Anime4k use CPU a lot more than other engines and it don't use GPU that much, that's why it seems like it's using CPU only

i think the two biggest issues with this would be shows/movies/etc that are overly dark in certain scenes as well as some shows that intentionally add the bars (usually top and bottom) for dramatic effect / parody. if the software was examining each frame individually, that could cause mismatching. so then it'd need to look at the entire video as a whole and determine the added borders. an issue being if the video is segmented and by chance one of the segments is mostly within acceptable parameters.

yes indeed, I was told gpu vs cpu upscaling is a tad less in quality?> is that true?
