For those of you in southern Wisconsin and environs (and I know from the holiday cards there are several), would anyone care for an incredibly unplanned-for Patreon meetup in the Madison area Friday the 23rd? For reasons quite unforeseen and slightly unfortunate I have found myself here for a short while before Christmas and I am considering going to the Tasting Room (800 W Broadway #100, Monona WI) for a cigar tomorrow afternoon. I'll go for sure if any Patreon supporters would like to meet there; leave a comment on this post and let me know.

If that doesn't work for you or you live somewhere completely different, the Patreon meetups in Scandinavia convinced me that Patreon meetups are a great idea that I should have been doing whenever I traveled in the US all along. Whenever I know that I could be somewhere that I could host a meetup, I'll post about it here henceforth, hopefully with more advance warning (and I'll be back in Madison at some point anyway). And of course I'll make a point of announcing any other events, e.g. public talks, on Patreon too.

By the way the Puffin Brutality patches are now live on Varusteleka if you want that particular weird piece of memorabilia.

All the best for now,

Jackson Crawford

P.S. My Patreon messages don't work. I don't get notifications for them, and there's nothing on my home page to show me when there is or isn't a message. I can't even always see them when I check for them manually, and you won't see it if I reply! The best ways to get in touch are: a) just to comment on posts like this, b) to post in the  Community page, or c) to email my assistant Stella at [admin AT JacksonWCrawford.com]--remember the 'W' between my first and last names in that domain name.

Do you ever end up in the DC area/DMV? I don't know if any of your other patreon supporters are in this area, or if you ever come out this way, but if you do let us know!

There are definitely enough people around there to justify a meetup. I've only been long ago in a different life, and then I was there much of July in 2021 to record the Great Courses thing--a year before it occurred to me to try these meetups.

I have a question for all the Old Norse specialists here in the chat. Is there an Old Norse word for Ambergis? They must have known the substance as it comes from whales, but I think the word amber was introduced later into European languages

I don't know of one, but I also don't know of any detailed descriptions of whaling in Old Norse. Possibly in the King's Mirror?
