(I am posting about this a little bit earlier in advance than I normally do, because the next week and a half or so will be so crowded with events and visits related to the upcoming book release on October 20th that I am trying to get ahead of anything I would normally do in that time window.)

I've been in touch with numerous scholars in Denmark who are working on the new find from Vindelev, one of the most significant Scandinavian archaeological finds in a long time, and slowly I'm managing to arrange Crowdcast conversations with people who have different kinds of expertise touching on it for you.

Our first guest in this series is Dr. Helle Horsnæs of the National Museum of Denmark, who is an expert on Roman coins in Scandinavian finds (many of which were discovered in the Vindelev find). These coins tell fascinating stories about the contacts of pre-Viking Age Scandinavia with the wider world, and also have a long and twisted history of use within early Scandinavia itself. This will be a spectacular opportunity to find out more about a little-known but extremely impactful part of archaeology in Denmark and beyond!

If you're interested in some reading on the subject beforehand, Dr. Horsnæs recommends this paper by Aleksander Bursche, and you can find a number of papers on intriguing Iron Age finds on her own academia.edu page as well

I hope you'll be able to join us in about two weeks--this Crowdcast will be live for your questions on Thursday, October 28th, at 9:00 a.m. U.S. Mountain time (the start time ought to display in your local timezone at that registration link).

Thank you as always for your kind support, and all the best for now,

Jackson Crawford

A major temptation smack in the middle of my workday. I'll either have to hide in the broom closet or come up with a 'dentist's appointment' nearby where no one will spot me sitting in my car .

Hi Jackson! I'm not sure if you usually take questions for crowdcast guests in advance. If not, feel free to ignore the rest of this message, but if so: I'm not going to be able to make it to the crowdcast (assuming the time/day doesn't change), but I've got a (multi-part) question that I'd like to request be asked to Dr. Horsnæs if there's time and opportunity, please. What was the general impression of Roman coins and medallions among the Germanic peoples? Were they usually respected as a symbol of a powerful foreign people, or were they sometimes looked down on as inferior because they were foreign? Would geographic proximity to the Roman Empire affect that answer? If there's not time to ask, or if that question is off-topic from the rest of the conversation, that's perfectly fine. Prioritizing the questions of people who are there during the crowdcast probably makes for better conversation anyway. I appreciate all you do.
