April Poll

  • How did the Norse talk about mental health? (note: see also video on "veterans' issues" & to some extent the Gisli's Saga recaps) 45
  • Did the Norse write about Bigfoot? (Note: short answer is no, I have no idea how this idea has gotten out there to the degree it has.) 4
  • What did Danes/Swedes/Norwegians/etc. think of one another? Are there medieval-era stereotypes Scandinavians had about one another? 91
  • Differences between what's written about burial customs in literature vs. what is found in archaeological finds. 73
  • Another video about textiles. (I suppose in addition to the material in the Crowdcast with Avedan Raggio.) 13
  • Whether Viking raids are accurately depicted today, and if there are major misconceptions about them. 88
  • Long-range travels of the Norse, to Byzantium, Russia, the Mediterranean countries, etc. 81
  • Guns/sharpshooting content. 30
  • An "intro. to Faroese" video. 31
  • Comparing the pre-Christian religion of the Norse to that of the English or Germans (note:there's less material here than many people think) 54
  • The climate disaster of 536 in Scandinavia (note: also discussed in the Rök stone videos from Jan 2020) 51
  • Interaction of the Finns and Sámi with the Norse, in language, trade, ideas about magic (note: see also video on Norse and other cultures) 61
  • Reading of Hárbarðsljóð (from the Poetic Edda) in Old Norse with commentary 26
  • Reading of Sólarljóð in Old Norse with commentary 25
  • The "Amber Road" trading route 39
  • The history of the myth of Sigurðr/Siegfried and its origins (somewhat discussed in the Crowdcast with Taylor Budde) 28
  • How did Old Norse evolve in Greenland? (note: there is very little evidence to work with) 20

Erilaz-tier supporters made many great suggestions for video topics this month.  Stella and I have summed up the topics briefly in the poll below, but in some cases the suggestions are given in more detail in the comments on the suggestions post (which is now closed for further submissions until next month). Every patreon supporter on every tier gets to vote, so vote for the videos you want to see made!

Winning suggestions sometimes take a long time to prepare videos on, so there is no promise about how soon a given winning topic will be made into a video. I also tend to try to make videos that address other topics that get high numbers of votes.

Suggested topics have been left out of the poll if an already-existing video addresses them. Even so, some of the ones left are at least partially covered in other videos already, and please understand that there's very little evidence for me to work with in addressing some topics that might be popular. Sometimes I might have to make a video that just says, "I don't know."

The poll is open for a week (through midnight before Wednesday April 21st in my timezone).

All the best for now and thank you as always for your support,

Jackson Crawford

P.S. Patreon remains a deeply imperfect website, and I have to work with it as it is. I have been frustrated over the past several months to see that not only do I NOT get most of your Patreon messages at all but that even when I see one and reply, supporters usually do NOT get a notification that I replied. Lately even my own posts are sometimes deleted in the process of typing them! I understand how irritating this is for everyone, and I assure you that I sympathize, while I also am grateful to Patreon and all of you for the difference you make in allowing me to make a living from teaching in this way. For now, with all the Patreon malfunctions, by far the most reliable way to get in touch is by emailing the address monitored by Stella at admin AT JacksonWCrawford.com (please remember the "W" between my first and last names).

Living in the Pacific Northwest, I can tell you the Bigfoot encounter story comes from a bad interpretation or understanding of the Vinland Sagas that has been retold a thousand times like a bad game of telephone by countless cryptozoologists at conferences and on lousy podcasts. My sister is a BFRO investigator and I argue with bigfooters constantly over this.

How do you actually cast your vote? I put a check next to my choice but then what?

Clicking your choice (or multiple ones) should be all you have to do-- after that, if you're able to see how many votes each choice has gotten so far, it's been counted.
