For anyone interested in what went into my consulting work on Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, here is a fun interview that I did together with Darby McDevitt (Narrative Director on the game) with the Invicta gaming channel on Youtube.

How the Viking Sagas Shaped Assassin's Creed Valhalla - History Podcast

In this epic podcast we discuss the best of both world's history and gaming. Specifically we talk about how ancient Norse sagas shaped Assassins Creed Valhalla. I am joined by Darby McDevitt, the narrative director for Assassins Creed Valhalla, and Dr. Jackson Crawford, a scholar and educator of ancient Norse history. We begin the video by introducing our guests and seeing what first brought them into the world of the Viking Age. We then talk about the history of the old norse sagas and their role in Viking history. Specific examples are given about how they were produced, what form they took, and what they discussed. Dr. Jackson Crawford provides an excellent summary of the viking sagas including the Volsunga Sagas, Egils Saga, and more from which we derive Norse mythology, Norse Myth, and Norse history. Next we pivot to see how the Assassins Creed Valhalla engaged with this material and went on to incorporate it into the Assassins Creed Valhalla campaign and story. In my own Assassins Creed Valhalla review from early access I can indeed confirm that much of what we discussed shines though into the game. I feel this conversation further enriched my experience and I know it will for you as well. So I asked my daughter what she did today and she responded, "oh, you know - exploring and raiding and things." Needless to say, she's very much enjoying the game.

I'm like 30 hours in. Awesome immersion of norse culture. But those bastards took out one handed swords.
