Here's this week's Patreon Old Norse vocabulary, featuring words related to secrecy.

Sometimes I've been attached to so many projects over the past few months that I've had a hard time remembering what was secret and what wasn't (thankfully I always erred on assuming "secret"). But the Assassin's Creed announcement was a big one, and I'm glad I finally can say even a little bit about that. Still working with Ubisoft about releasing information related to specific details on the same schedule as they do, so stay tuned.

I was also happy that Len Krisak wrote to say he approved of my reading of his poem "Percentages" as part of this "Poems I Noticed" series I've been experimenting with on some weekends.

Sagas videos will probably always be a minority taste, but have had some dedicated followers on Patreon.  Laxdǿla saga was a major request from that quarter for a while, and I'm reasonably pleased with how I handled its first two major generations in the first of two videos about it. The saga sprawls like an unraveling denim sleeve after that (at least from our modern novel-reading perspective), but the second installment, coming up, has me doing what I can to keep at least the thread of the three main characters' dramas clear.

As always, thank you for your kind support, and all the best for this week,

Jackson Crawford

If I remember correctly, the modern English word “idiot” ultimately has its origins in a very similar sense of a person who keeps to themselves, but I’m not sure in which language the more derogatory usage developed.

I was delighted to hear Laxdola saga. It is a personal favorite. It was the first saga I stumbled upon. That was something like 45 years ago in a used bookstore, I found the design on the cover attractive. I found the meandering and digressions into genealogy appealing.
