This is the first video I've been really happy with in a while, both since it was a direct response to a topic I knew several people wanted and since I feel like I have advanced considerably in video-making now that I've invested a little bit of time in learning how to add text and photos to a video before uploading it. Another experiment was to feature both reconstructed Old Norse and Modern Icelandic pronunciation, something I can maybe continue doing in the future except in videos that require a huge amount of reading.

There are now too many comments on Youtube for me to spend time keeping up with them, but I am always happy to hear Patreon supporters' thoughts here on what you think about both content and format, and related topics you'd like to see explored.

I might also continue to remake some of my older videos, as I've been doing slowly over the past five months. Many of the pre-2017 videos have awful audio and video quality compared to what I've learned how to do now, and even some of the early 2017 ones might need to get remade eventually since they relied so heavily on Youtube's now-defunct annotations.

This video was filmed on location at the old Crawford place in central Colorado.

Hello Mr. Crawford! Jól is approaching and I want to get this right! Younger Futhark. Til árs ok friðar. - ᛏᛁᛚ ᚬᚱᛋ ᚢᚴ ᚠᚱᛁᚦᛅᚱ?

norsebysw

That would look about right for late Younger Futhark, post-1000. In the Viking Age, I would write ᛅᚢᚴ ᚠᚱᛁᚦᛅᛦ See: https://youtu.be/X7Z65582ex4

Ok, watched the episode and got the reasons for the differences. I have to say that Old Norse has remarkable similarities to a dialect of Swedish I grew up with (spoken in the municipality of Pyhtää in Finland).

Dr. Crawford, were you by any chance approached about consulting on The Huntsman: Winter's War? I was re-watching it recently, and the runes along the mirror made me think of you. :D Here's a clip that reveals a bit of the runes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkUV347bkgQ Is Emily Blunt's character reading from something accurate, or are those runes nothing but a fabrication meant to look cool for casual viewers?
