simon is calling things off because he realizes his feelings are running deeper than just a rouse. things got very intense in that art room. their hands almost touched, which is a huge no-no in that time. it would be a huge, intimate moment that only should happen between a husband and a wife, and he desired to touch her hand. he also sees that the prince is a good prospect for daphne. he knows he never wants to marry and have a family, as anthon explained, but he knows she desires those things. the prince could give her those things, while he could not. he's trying to pull away and save themselves from getting any deeper than they already are. anthony cannot be with sienna because she is not "of society." he is to marry a lady who will become the next viscountess, replacing his mother, as the head of the household next to anthony. sienna does not want that life, and anthony cannot give up that life. they cannot be together, inspite of anthony being kind of immature and wanting his cake and eating it too. everyone wants daphne because she's desirable. the bridgertons are like, the cream of the crop. they are wealthy and from "good breeding." she is kind, sweet, pretty, and intelligent, and has the queen's favor. i know you cannot see it, but she really is The Diamond of The First Water, and many want to be able to stake claim to that. daphne does sincerely want love and romance and to be married to someone that's "her best friend" as her mother was to her father. i get not everyone has to like every character but i wonder what she did so wrong? she's a product of her time, but unlike the featheringtons (aside from pen) she's not trying to marry for money or use anyone or get ahead (featheringtons are always trying to shmooze their way through society lol). she simply desires a different set of goals than eloise. she wants to marry and become a mother. there's nothing wrong with that choice, just as there's nothing wrong with eloise's choice to stray from those things.

The reason why people are so drawn to Daphne is yes ofc she's beautiful and rich and comes from a good family, but also as this episode has shown she really knows how to play the game - how to get attention from men and how to carry herself. eloise studies books, daphne studies society and both are pretty smart at it.

Also why the bridgerton boys are all unmarried: men at that time didn't have to marry as soon as the women bc the whole point of marriage back then for men was to have children that can one day inherit everything and since men can have kids at any age, there is no real time limit set. It's super sexist, but that was how they did it back then.

one more thing: each season of bridgerton follows one bridgerton sibling finding their husband/wife. season 1 is daphne, season 2 is someone else. so you'll see them all married at some point.

In the time period of Bridgerton, there is no internet etc. so Daphne's entire world is her family and high society, and she knows only what her mother has told her. She has no idea of the kind of places Marina was taken in this episode, or how it is for Sienna, the opera singer, to make her way without having an established family. Men are sent to boarding school with the other boys and therefore they find out a LOT more. They see more of the world and aren't shielded from this information by their fathers etc. because they're not expected to be innocent and chaste. Also, women like sienna are aware because lower class people are less proper with how they behave and how they raise their children because they have nobody to impress and the children need thicker skins and harsher truths to survive. Girls in these circumstances aren't shielded from sex and alcohol etc. because they're not expected to be 'pure' for a man of high society. In fact, some were likely brought up to think they could use them to get by in a mans world, the way Sienna is now searching for a new gentleman caller to keep her in high fashions and money. Daphne, on the other hand, wants to fall in love but has been hidden away from men until she hit the age where she entered society as a single women with no experience or knowledge of even her own body. Told her entire life revolved around marriage and being perfect so her image is attractive to land a husband. Her mother prepared her to project that image and reel them in, but not about being in a marriage or a relationship and what comes after. She's not even allowed to be alone with a man, so she has no way of finding out until she's married or told. Eloise by comparison was also kept in the dark, but her life hasn't been half as managed because she's younger and has more time to prepare while her mother focused on daphne. She had the downtime to discover other interests that are hers and hers alone, not bargaining chips to impress the men of society, which is how she developed her sense of independence and feminism. Daphne is a product of her time and birth status.

Also, men of that time wanted the *diamond* of the dating season. They're all about class and wealth, and image. So a woman who rejects a Duke in favor of marrying one of them would therefore garner a reputation and a higher standing in society with Lady Whistledown reporting on everything... It's all about treating the women as prizes and the men are in competition. That's why so many flocked to Daphne when she debuted with Simon.
