I think a lot of people hype it up because of season 2, myself included, but season 1 holds its own and definitely gets better as it goes. The favorite side characters get more story time, like the smart bridgerton sister named Eloise or penelope (derry girls). Anthony is a little insufferable this season but beloved in season 2. They just really exaggerated his over protectiveness

I just wanted to mention that this is from a book series that came out before the gossip girl book series did.

Literally just waiting for you to get to season 2 lol like season 1 is strong and it blew up I mean it was huge when it came out. But when season 2 was released it was Netflix's most viewed show at the time besides Stranger Things. So yea excited for you to get to the next season.

I am myself waiting for you to react to season 2, it was fire. Season 1 was just okay to me, I didn't connect with the main couple and was more interested in side characters

I‘ll answer a few of your questions: Why is this show so hyped? —> it first aired during christmas time during the pandemic and just fit the need for escapism and just a fun romance series and it was well-shot. The second season was even more hyped bc it was truly GREAT. What happened to Daphne‘s back? —> the dresses back then were so tight, it left bruises. It’s supposed to show the things women had to endure back then. Why is Anthony so weird? —> Men are completely unaware of women‘s struggles back then and from Anthony‘s pov he just wanted the best husband possible for his sister, but he was overprotective in that way and his mother reminded him to concern himself with his own love life first and letting her deal with Daphne. Why don’t the Featherington sisters have more suitors? —> For one, they are not as rich as the Bridgertons so their dowry wouldn’t be as big. Second, they both suck at drawing attention to themselves and are entitled as shit (besides Penelope but she is just shy). Why can’t Anthony marry the singer? —> She is not a “lady of society”, meaning she was not born with a title. Anthony could marry her anyways (men are allowed so much more freedom here), but it would stain his family’s reputation therefore making it harder for his siblings to find husbands and wives and Anthony is a family man above all else, even Siena. Why would Daphne get more suitors if she dates the Duke? —> the whole “social season” is a time of the year where you get to decide who to marry or not marry. Some folks go through several years of social season if they can’t find the right fit. So think of it as Daphne going on a date, not necessarily saying she’ll marry the Duke, just that they are both interested. Which then will have other men wanting to date her as well bc if the Duke likes her she must be special. And the duke can now always say he’s already courting someone when any other lady wants to dance with him. It’s a win-win for both Daphne and Simon. I will not spoil you but I truly love that you love all the best characters on the show already - Anthony, Eloise, Simon, Penelope. It sure makes what’s coming more interesting for you :)

The show does get better as it goes on. There is a reason it's so hyped. I love both season 1 and 2! And the characters you love do get more screen time as it goes along. I got *those* vibes off Anthony the first time I watched it too. The Game of Thrones vibes lmao, but he's just so uptight and has a title and a duty he doesn't seem to want, but has to live up to as the eldest son, so he goes wayyyy over the top with the protection thing. It's also not about beauty for Daphne. In those days, high society decided who was worth looking at and who wasn't. Because the Queen gave Daphne her favor, she was deemed the IT girl of the season, and because of Anthony, she's proving the Queen wrong. Basically, everyone has pressure on them that they don't want, but the women have it in BUCKETS compared to the men, so Daphne while she seems just okay in personality, has been raised to believe her entire self-worth is directly related to being married and being the perfect wife.

I'm gonna watch this with you for the same time (although I already know everything that happens in this show).

You're absolutely correct that it's a meat market where the women are considered property and the men are belittling, it's just the era. And yes, Duke is a pretty high rank and there wouldn't be tons of them. We may need to find some other period shows for you to check out. She's the Man is actually Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. This would also be similar to Jane Austen things like Pride and Prejudice and Clueless. And yes, there are tons of modern songs arranged to sound "period". Antony may be rubbing you the wrong way, in part, because you just saw him as "little shit" nephew Olly, the reporter in Broadchurch. I noticed you recognized Clare from Derry Girls or looked her up. Oh, and the voiceover is the legendary Julie Andrews.

You hearing maroon 5 makes me feel better. I thought I was hearing Ariana Grande before that, shows I'm not completely crazy

Maybe the other movie you're thinking of is The Proposal where they pretended to be together for immigration reasons, then fell in love. The reason Anthony can't marry Sienna is not money, it's rank/title. Sienna is a commoner. And the reason it's his duty to marry is because it's his duty to produce an heir. He's the oldest son so his oldest son would be the next Lord.
