Whenever I see that beginning scene I'm like well clearly Dan had psychopathic tendencies as a kid too. Hurting animals is a big tell for antisocial issues. I hate seeing Jimmy's mom bury him alone until the river court boys showed. Sidenote: one of the Columbine shooter's mothers has a Ted talk on living with it that's interesting. Underrated acting from her. Haley and Nathan's reaction made sense. I love Whitey's talk with Lucas too.

Hard watching Bevin at a funeral right now. 😭 In real life, her husband was just killed over the weekend, the day before the 4th of July. He was struck by lightning while on their boat. 💔

No worries. Literally the saddest scene in the episode is the last one. The scene with Jimmy's mother all alone at his funeral breaks my heart more than I can say!!

Jimmy did try to commit suicide, which his mother brushed off, so there were signs, but you are right, back then mental health wasn't taken as seriously by parents and was still somewhat taboo. The show did acknowledge that it should have been taken seriously. The show did a great job in showing how Jimmy got to the point he was at. Loved the scene at the end when the Rivercourt guys went to the funeral despite still thinking he killed Keith. They know they should have done better by him. I'm sure his mother feels the same. Such a tragedy. That's not the pinnacle episode, at least for me. There are a couple more epis, one in season 4 and one in season 9 that I like even more.

I am going to be in the minority here and will say I did not find it realistic that Lucas went to Jimmy’s funeral. We as the audience knows what happened and who really killed Kieth but the characters doesn’t. Whether Jimmy was bullied or had a mental illness. He brought a gun to school and accidentally shot Peyton and held a classroom (half of who has to be his friends) at gunpoint and the killed the man who was trying to help him in Kieth. Again us audience know Dan is the killer but again the characters does not so I found it unrealistic. Mouth also was disrespectful talking about Jimmy’s funeral when they are saying goodbye to Kieth. The characters are supposed to believe Jimmy killed Kieth here so nah you can’t do that. Karen Roe was probably written most realistic from beginning to end of the episode for me. In saying that. This episode was very amazing and well written for the most part.

See, I disagree. Lucas said it best: it's what Keith would've wanted. Regardless of what happened or what they think happened, Jimmy is still dead. He still killed himself. And they knew nobody else was gonna show up at that funeral. Paying your respects doesn't mean you forgive the person, it just means you're kind and feel sad that this person is no longer alive.

I think Jimmy's actions are a combination of a number of terrible things - the bullying nobody was doing anything about, the father leaving, the mother being overwhelmed, his suicidal thoughts and attempts at suicide and last but most definitely not least that Jimmy had access to a gun. I understand everyone's viewpoint. I understand Lucas feeling mega conflicted bc Jimmy killed his father figure but at the same time he has compassion for Jimmy and that he was sick. Mouth not wanting to have Jimmy be forgotten, as he blames himself for not being there for his buddy when it mattered, Rachel for feeling a sense of responsibility too for releasing the time capsule as aprank and starting this whole mess off, Brooke for wanting to support bothLucas and Peyton but feeling insecure about it, Karen just being grief-struck and lashing out, Whitey just missing his friend, Dan being haunted (rightfully so!) by his actions and Nathan & Haley realising that life is too short to live it apart.

Tia

That’s where I disagree. You do not need to pay your respect to the person who shot your friend, held your friends hostage and then killed your Uncle. IN TIME, I am okay if Lucas would’ve been thinking about “this is what Kieth would’ve done” but not now. Also if Jimmy had killed Lucas do you think Kieth would be going to Jimmy’s funeral because he’s sad no one else is showing up? When you exit the world killing a persons in the way they assumed Jimmy then then unfortunately sympathy gets thrown out the window. I feel a lot of fans minds are clouded because they know Jimmy isn’t the killer but he actually killed Kieth then the tune would be different. Again I feel bad for what happened to Jimmy especially Kieth death getting pinned on him but I am just judging the point of view of the characters Also when it comes to the funeral we all know that Mouth would’ve been there so someone else was going to show up.

So many good scenes in this episode, but the scene I find myself returning to the most is that Lucas and Peyton scene in the library. There is something about it that is so precious and special. The way they are able to find the quiet time to connect with each other and support each other through all the chaos and misery, and even have that time to smile and laugh, idk, I think they both needed it. "I know how you are. I'm the same way." I've always appreciated that about their relationship, since they always seem to find a way to find each other and break through to each other. There seems to be a strange disconnect between Brooke and Lucas. Brooke wanting Lucas to rescue her and Brooke thinking Lucas would enjoy any part of that party. Like, I could have told her that Luke would hate basically everything about that. And about Luke going to Jimmy's funeral. I totally buy it. He was clearly working through where he can hold Jimmy in his head the entire episode, and after his conversation with Skills and especially after his conversations with Naley and Whitey, it makes total sense why he would decide to go, even if he didn't forgive Jimmy. It honestly made me sob.

I think that disconnect between Lucas and Brooke has been there from the get-go. Brooke has always felt insecure in her relationship with him, whereas Peyton and Lucas always had that bond bc they're so similar. Lucas and Brooke are a very playful high-school relationship but they don't classify as soulmates in my book.

Anna

The most depressing thing about this episode is everyone thinking Jimmy killed Keith, I remember being just so so angry about that when I watched for the first time.

I Am Not Chamari

I agree! It's just interesting to see Brooke battling that insecurity and Lucas battling opening up with Brooke vs. Lucas and Peyton having a natural ease with each other when Brooke was seen as the less complicated option back in Season 1.

I always love your comments to the more serious episodes! Fantastic reaction.

I agree with Tia. I don't think it's realistic for ANY of them to show up to Jimmy's funeral. I think it would have been really sad to see his mom alone at the funeral and it would have worked really well for the episode and where the show is at currently. No one knows the truth, only that Jimmy brought a gun to school, shot Peyton, held a bunch of students hostage for a few hours, and apparently killed Keith in a murder-suicide. They don't know that Jimmy was innocent. Even Mouth bringing it up, despite feeling guilty over Jimmy losing it, made no sense cuz all these people were close to Keith. They would have felt angry and hated Jimmy, tbh. Lucas suddenly changing his mind, too, made ZERO sense.

Angela

How is that the most depressing part? I don’t get it. Keith died. That’s the sad part. Jimmy shooting up a school very much could have killed people so he’s not some innocent victim
