Having not seen your reaction yet, I feel like the thumbnail you picked is perfect.

I think you giving it a 6 is generous. This is widely regarded as one of the worst series finales of all time. It’s terrible and knowing that the show is coming back doesn’t make it less awful.

I think since I’m not watching it while it airs and knowing they will have a new season my brain dosnt look at it as a finale. So my score is bias based on when I have seen it.

I thought the show brought up some very interesting ideas revolving Dexter becoming "normal" across the last 2 seasons. Unfortunately the execution in this season felt off, and the end result overshadows those ideas completely. Remembering back to near when the series first ended, I think the biggest issue people had was that neither Dexter or Deb had happy endings. Though I don't exactly know how you could write one of them to be happy with the others' sad ending. The lumberjack thing feels more like a funny throw away, but like you said Debra and Saxons endings were both pretty sudden and didn't feel like there was much weight to them. This episode hit a bit harder for me this time because as you pointed out, last episode seemed like an improvement compared to the rest of the season and then the viewers are hit with this whiplash.

I really hope they dont bring back any of the old cast to the new season. Like oh Angel is on vacation and runs into Dexter then calls everyone up oh hey youll never guess who I ran into... The worst parts of the show to me are when they started trying to force these side stories with the other characters. I cared more about Dexter and I feel development in his areas suffered. LaGuerta for example gets killed int he book by Dexters brother yet we get 6 more seasons of BS from her very little of it being anything other than annoying.

Just think if you had to wait 8 years like most of the rest of us! Michael C Hall has been asked EVERY year since 2013 is it coming back. EVERY time he would say "never say never". And we would all hope. False rumors floated around every other year so I was dubious to say the least that it was really coming back. I can't even believe it is! You won't be as excited as old viewers like us are I know. First, Jennifer Carpenter had ASKED for Deb to die. Seriously. The reasoning behind the ending was that Dexter dumped Deb because he considers her his final victim. And he sent himself into "exile". Truth is Showtime wanted him to live for a future venture which we are having now. I do think Saxton was trying to get back at Dexter. I loved the kill scene more than you and I loved Quinn's reaction. MCH said it wasn't the worst idea, just not well executed. He felt that a partial reason was because Dexter didn't talk to us at the end. Episode 11 was pretty good. Especially Deb working with Dexter. I hope you are planning to react to the two teasers that have been released now. First one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvImJz6hRl0 Second one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA-oCTUrNfE We don't know much except MCH insisted that it not be "the next day", but at least 10 years later even though supposedly we will find out what happened. He said "I can look in the mirror and see that time has passed", but he looks pretty darned good for 50! He is living in a tiny fictional town called Iron Lake NY and his alias is Jim Lindsay (the author of the book was Jeff Lindsay - an homage). We know that John Lithgow (Trinity) films a new flashback and that Jennifer Carpenter (Deb) will be back (the new Harry maybe?) They cast a 17 year to play "Harrison" who's name is now Randall (remember Wayne Randall?) and that's pretty much all that has been released. I REALLY look forward to watching this all with you as it unfolds starting November 7. Thank you for hanging in there!

Also, the original showrunner from seasons 1-4, Clyde Phillips, is back for this revival which bodes well in my book!

The thing that really made this look even worse when it aired was that 7 days later, we got to see the Series Finale of Breaking Bad. In a 7 day period we got perhaps the worst finale of all time juxtaposed against perhaps the best finale of all time.

Oops, I forgot one trailer. This was actually the second one. They are all so short you could react to them all together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr5NixKgrz8

But they had to turn Walter into the vilest person imaginable in order for us to be GLAD he died! I'm sorry, I'm glad they didn't do that to Dexter and hope that they don't do it in the reboot. Over the 8 seasons he became more human, not more evil like Walter.

I was probably 11 or 12 when I watched the finale. All I remember is screaming at my tv.

I was really upset when Deb died.

Personally I always thought most of the story elements were solid, and the finale idea was good. But the writing, direction, and general execution of the show fell of a cliff in the second half of this season. There were still some good bits in there (and episode 11 was a bit of a reprieve), but I was pretty shocked. I remember going from wondering why people didn't like it to the extent they did one episode, to this sudden "what the hell happened" the next and it just went down from there.

Oh boy... I got a lot to say. Just to be clear, this is not Game of Thrones bad. Game of Thrones started a slow but steady deterioration in its last seasons. Season 7 GOT had a lot of problems writing wise and its final episodes were straight up poorly written. And Season 8 GOT was a steaming pile of S..t. Dexter did not have such a quality drop in writing. Season 7 was very good in my books, with small choice problems for me, that I have written about, and Season 8 was ok for the most part, with a mediocre finale. However for me the last 5 seconds of this episode, were the worst part. It was one of the worst choices I have seen a show take and i'll explain. When you have a “hero” like Dexter in your show, you can have either of 2 main endings for me. Either you try and redeem them and change them as a person and then have a sort of happily ever after, or even a sort of bitter sweet ending, or you go for a full on dark ending where you make your “hero” pay for all he has done (because let's face it, Dexter has done a lot). With the introduction of the Hannah character and the effect she had on Dexter, it seemed like the writers were teasing, that they would try for a sort of happy ending, were the “hero” is redeemed, and ultimately changed. Up till this last episode, we have seen real change in Dexter. Change that could in the end enable him to have this real life that he always wished he would be able to have. So that was somewhat hopeful. However the writers apparently had chosen to have a dark ending for their protagonist. I don't think I prefer that, but ok, I would be down with that. So a good way to have a really dark ending for the character, was for him to suffer a blow to a person dear to him, which he would in turn realise was partly his fault, and that would ultimately lead to the “hero's” death. For that person to be Harrison, would have been too much, and Hannah would have been too little (since we have only known her for two seasons). So it makes sense that they picked Deb to die. The way that they chose for her to die, was unfortunately kinda... meh... But ok. I'll roll with it. Life sucks like that. Death sorta happens. So Deb dying, leads to Dexter realising that he has wrecked her life (of course that's partly true, but in the emotional state he is in, it's understandable) and that he could potentially do the same to Harrison and Hannah. So he decides to “protect” them by taking himself out of the picture by taking his life, and driving his boat straight to the storm. I do not agree with the choice, but I can respect it and it is a bit poetic, since they decided to “punish” their protagonist. HOWEVER, the fact that they felt the need to add the last 5 seconds of Dexter as a lumberjack. Was utter shit and completely unforgiveable. It was a cop out and a very stupid one. They didn't have the balls to follow through with their choice to the end and chose this in between shit of Dexter supposedly living as a hermit, chopping wood. So that means that their “hero” despite feeling he destroys the lives of those he loves, didn't have the balls to take his own life for real and therefore rid the world from his destructive presence (as he seems to believe), willingly decided to ABANDON his son and also abandon the woman he claims to love. Not to mention the added f' you to Hannah, whom he just burdened with raising his son alone. So their “hero” as it turns out, apart from being an unrepenting psychopath, is also a weak willed, no balls, good for nothing asshole father and person. I have no idea what they will do for season 9, except try to milk the franchise more, but how on earth can they salvage this? How on earth can they retcon the choice their hero made 10 years ago? From what I know Strahovski is not returning, so Hannah will not factor in, so that means that Harrison will probably not factor in? My ultimate problem is that the character they ended with in the last 5 seconds, is a character I have no desire whatsoever to see in a show... EDIT: i just read a comment above that mentions that they cast a 17 year old Harrison... ok... so that will be an interesting conversation...
