I'm from Romania, and met a lot of Romani people. Many of them are really close with their families and have a lot of relatives, but no one I've ever met was so traditional as to not allow them to pursue their dreams or the people they want to be with. It was interesting albeit exaggerated.

For future reference, as far as I know, "gypsy" is not a nice term? Not sure if it's a SLUR specifically, but you shouldn't use it. Romani is best.
