Honestly not my favorite episode. There were some really cool parts like the birth scene and Darla having contractions. The rest didn't interest me, personally.

Calvin Allen

The birth scene is iconic. I just wish it was Cordy there with him instead of Fred. I always thought that was a weird choice.

Poor Lorne. Caritas destroyed AGAIN. And yeah, the prophecy lined up with what happened - technically Darla didn't give birth, so there was "only death" in that moment. It even mentioned "the sky weeping" (eg, rain) when it happened. And I'd say Angel didn't tell Holtz about his soul because, like Darla said here, he believes he deserves every bit of pain/death coming to him. So he wasn't about to start "making excuses," so to speak. I think the point of that Holtz flashback in this ep was to show that he learned there were worse things you could do to someone than "just" killing their loved ones. Angel and Darla taught him that. So yeah, "no mercy" means....watch this space, lol. That last scene is one of my top 5 favorite scenes from this show. Such a powerful way for a character to go out, imo.

Holtz staring down Angel in the rain, crossbow aimed, is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series

fuck I forgot how good this episode was. Wow this REALLY hit the feels

When you know what happens later in the story it makes sense why it actually is better for it to be Fred instead of Cordelia there.

the darla birth scene is iconic. one of my favorites from the series. love the visual of the dust literally slipping between angel's finger tips as darla stakes herself. she went out in the most legendary way possible.

also, not sure if you noticed...but the prophecy the guy at wolfram and hart read earlier in the episode turned out to be correct. it said when the sky opens and the heavens weep (when it rains) there will be no birth only death. and technically darla did not give birth and she did die. prophecies are such a huge part of this show. whenever one comes up -- be wary. :)

I like Darla as a character and her story arc, it's such an amazing contrast to the character that the actress plays on Dexter as Rita, she's actually one of my favorite characters as Darla, not my very utmost favorite but she's always a good thing and interesting character rather than unlikable one, unlike on Dexter where I found her to be kinda cringe and just in the way, but I don't think it's the actresses fault, i think that's literally the way they wrote her to be on purpose for you not even want to see her scenes and want to see Dex kill people instead, which highlights his inability to escape his human nature of being drawn to human companionship even though he convinced himself he was a monster.

Julie Benz is incredible in this episode. I can just feel the emotion pouring from her here. The ending on this one with Darla sacrificing herself is really great. And the scene with Holtz at the end will take on new meaning down the line. Really great stuff.

I also am not the biggest fan of Darla or this arc, but I consider this to be episode to very well written. It made the arc much more worthwhile for me.
