I like this episode and the big revelation of the identity of Rittenhouse but I was a bit annoyed that they chose to make the villain a real person instead of a fictitious character. I have long admired the real David Rittenhouse, who was the exact opposite of the Rittenhouse character in this episode. It was as if they had chosen to make George Washington the villain instead of creating a fictional character. The real David Rittenhouse was a self-taught genius who was an ardent patriot. He mastered Isaac Newton's "Principia" at the age of 13 and went on to become one of the first astronomers in the United States. His leadership of the American effort to observe the Transit of Venus in 1769 helped to measure the distance of the Earth from the Sun, and thereby determine the distances to all the other planets. He served as the second President of the American Philosophical Society, following the first, his friend Benjamin Franklin, and was succeeded by his friend Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson considered Rittenhouse, "second to no astronomer living: that in genius he must be the first, because he is self-taught." The depiction of Rittenhouse as a clockmaker is correct. He made many clocks and scientific instruments, including orreries for the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University, which are still preserved at those schools. The real Rittenhouse also served on many committees to aid the American Revolution and served in several government offices, including Director of the US Mint (he was appointed to that position by George Washington, who followed the example of Isaac Newton being appointed master of the British Mint. Rittenhouse also surveyed state boundaries and performed many other services.

Wow, didn't know any of that, I thought he was a made-up character. But not being American I only also knew "being a Benedict Arnold" as an insult. Even though I assumed it was a historical reference I never knew where to place him in history.

The man playing Rittenhouse is Armin Shimerman, he's most famous for playing the Ferengi barkeeper Quark on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. But in those years he was also Buffy's principal at Sunnydale High. Here's a video where they show him with his Quark make-up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLpSXOB6ZqQ (at the midway point he's then without it).
