The black woman at NASA was Katherine Johnson. You should react to the movie, "Hidden Figures," which tells her story and that of her coworkers. The movie deals with their time in the early days of Project Mercury and doesn't include the Apollo missions but the book goes into more detail about her later work calculating the trajectories for the lunar flights. I love this episode despite the fact that they didn't bother to get some of the history right. First, crippling the computers would not have cut off communication with the astronauts. The radios were analog and completely independent of the computers. Second, even though they did normally use computer data radioed from Houston, the astronauts could have still lifted off from the moon without it if they had to. Buzz Aldrin (whose name you tried to recall) actually did his doctoral thesis at M.I.T. on orbital rendezvous techniques and he had worked with Katherine Johnson and other mathematicians to develop a set of pre-calculated tables for use in the event the crew lost communication with Earth. They could get their orientation from star sightings and the tables would tell them when to launch and how long to burn the engine to rendezvous with Mike Collins , orbiting the moon in the command module. Third, the program showed Mission Control viewing live TV of the descent to the lunar surface. There was no TV during the descent. The TV camera was stowed in the lunar module and would not be available until Neil Armstrong pulled a lanyard to deploy it as he climbed down the ladder to the surface. The pictures showing the descent to the moon were actually taken by a 16mm film camera mounted in the window of the spacecraft, just above Buzz Aldrins head. That footage wouldn't be seen until they returned to Earth and the film was developed - a week later. You can easily see the difference as the film footage has much higher resolution than the TV transmissions. Some of these things they added for dramatic purposes but it seems like the writers could have paid a little more attention to detail and gotten some of the other things right. Even so, I still loved this episode.

I forgot to add that the image on the screen at Mission Control of an astronaut supposedly being transmitted from Apollo was actually film of John Glenn during his Mercury flight seven years before the moon landing!
