One reason this show stands out in the sci-fi genre is the crazy amount of world building done via "show not tell" in such a short amount of time. Just in this episode we start to understand the universe the characters are living in through the use of small details like the eating of the strawberry showing the lack of fresh resources, Inara's sponge bath and Mal's restroom scene showing the utilitarian nature life on the ship, and the high value of food on the border planets.

Guess I have to watch this again lol

Such a good pilot! The world and characters are so well established.

Also, you asked about the war Mal and Zoe fought in. I don't think it's a spoiler, it's indicated in the first episode, but if your curious - I will spell it out more clearly: It's the Unification War. It's basically a parallel to the Revolutionary War where planets that were getting screwed over wanted independence from the the Union of Allied Planets. Like they said in the pilot, so many people were screwed over - thrust onto border planets and given nothing to survive: the alliance took the recourses for themselves and left the outer planets to fend for themselves but did not let them rule themselves - so the outer planets attempted to secede.

You were talking about Mal and asking about his personality. You'll notice that he defended Kaylee at dinner and wouldn't let Jayne say something negative to her. He also is honorable because he told the guy that if he killed him they would be facing him and armed. Yet, the way he treats Inara is in opposition to this. You'll see why this is in time. You also asked about Inara's arrangement, which they said in the first episode. She rents a shuttle that is attached to the ship from Mal. Mal doesn't get any other form of payment than that. Male also described that have a companion on board actually gives them some respectability and is needed in some ports. He mentioned they couldn't even dock without Inara being on board in some places. Companions have a higher social class...sort of like a diplomat.

Looking forward to your reactions to this show!

Awwww hells yeah! Let's go! Just a heads up, I always give every episode for this show a 10. There are only a handful of them, and every episode has something iconic in it that people remember. If the show had been given a fair shake and allowed to go on, my opinions would undoubtedly be more nuanced, but it didn't, so they're not. Sorry not sorry. :D I'm assuming as I'm on a lower tier and several weeks behind everyone else that the way Fox messed with this show have already been explained to you several times over. So, I'll hold my tongue lol. But I am so freaking excited to watch this with you!! :D
