This episode is more deeper than others this season and explains Derek's backstory and Deucalion's backstory too. Which now it explains a lot of previous episodes questions but gives more as well. May have been a slow one on the action but very good one on the storyline.

the next episode is crazy and probably one of my favs:) can’t wait

Talia, the girl you called motherly and could shape-shift into an actual wolf was actually Derek’s mother, not his sister. Laura (deceased) and Cora are Derek’s sisters.

Teen Wolf’s lore and storyline is so interesting to me. It’s actually deeper than you might think. Teen Wolf’s story isn’t just about Scott, Allison, Stiles, etc., it’s also about everything and everyone that came before it in this storyline and people who paved the way. People such as Talia, Laura, Deucalion, the Argents, even Deaton played a huge role back then. It’s so much that happened beforehand and I honestly want a prequel spinoff about the Hales.

This episode is really interesting because of these different perspectives, throughout the episode we have these flashbacks that tell a time that made certain characters what they are today, and they are told by two notorious psychopaths and liars, we can see for example that Peter tells Stiles and Cora that Derek was obsessed with the idea of transforming Paige while it was he who harassed Derek with this idea by persuading him, playing on the fact that eventually she would one day find out what he is and abandon him. Gerard is also seen to relate that he was caught in a trap by Deucalion as it was he who made a trap, even killing his own hunters who wanted peace just to keep this war against the werewolves, using besides a medieval weapon to make so that everyone believes that it was the claws of wolves which kill them, it is really vicious. Gerard never wanted peace, he hates wolves to a terrible point, especially with this dangerous sense that he thinks he is superior to them even though ironically he wanted to become one to cure his cancer. Then in this episode we see that Deucalion at the time was only the opposite of what he is today, he was a kind of older Scott, and maybe even more peaceful and hopeful. Until Gerard takes his sight out of him, showing him the extent that hatred can take place in a person's mind and that's when murdering his beta he realizes he's getting their powers. We then understand that with his hatred he managed somehow to convince Ennis and Kali to eliminate their packs so that they can be the strongest and defend themselves from the attacks of people like Gerard. Be fearless. We meet Talia, who is Derek's mother and Peter's big sister, we see that the Hale family held a special place within the werewolf community, we also discover the role of emissaries who are there to guide and advise. Deaton has taken on this role somewhat for Scott's pack since season 1. We also discover where blue eyes come from, it is by taking an innocent life that we lose something in our soul and we often say that the gaze is the mirror of the soul, so it makes sense to in a way that the eyes reflect the nature of a wolf with that cold blue or bright yellow. I love that we see Scott threatening Gerard, he's been bugging me since his return and finally a character puts him back in his place. I like to see also that Scott can be actually cold and threatening toward his enemy and not always this teenager who see love and unicorns everywhere. You know what I mean, teenager... Poor Derek anyway, after losing this first love, he will fall for Kate who will burn his family leaving him alone, then now he had to kill Boyd his beta. It is truly tragic. So yes a lot of things are truly amazing in this episode where some much things are explained, however the atmosphere I must say, which slowly turns towards a tragic dark one. I didn't realize that it was your first fantastic series, it's true that for people who have seen a lot of series and read books on this theme even if none are really alike we ended up knowing the basics and have answers that come without really searching because we know this universe. Anyway, if you like fantasy it would be great if you could react to another series like that. Besides, I'm amazed that you've never seen Harry Potter, it would be really nice if you could do reactions from those movies for the movie tier, I'm sure you would appreciate HP. While waiting for the next episode, it will answer one of the questions that you would like to know so much and now it will really escalate the action without stopping for a minute, hang on !

A prequel about the Hale would be amazing actually, never thought of that, so sad they gave up the idea of a spin off, it work so good these days...

I felt the exact same way about Deucalion after watching this episode.....and began hating Gerard even more............ The best thing about the flashbacks is that they’re told by two unreliable sources which in my opinion was a nice touch

I love badass Scott. And this is a really great episodes with a lot of backstories! Don't worry we all love this episode and you don't have to feel bad about that... Also a lot of us have rewatched the show a bunch of times which is why we have a lot of insight and picked up a lot of things. We were similarly a bit clueless on our first watch so you are doing fine!

Tendai kangas

I love how we see that Peter and Gerard are just manipulators who tell their story in a way that paints them as innocent, even though in the flashback we see something completely different.

Great reaction David. I hope at some point you will do another supernatural show. Maybe Shadowhunters or even one that Steven is currently doing. I would be interested to see your reactions to say Buffy the Vampire Slayer or The Vampire Diaries to see how your thoughts differ from your brother.

Just to let you know the Dropbox link isn’t working, I don’t know if that’s just me but I thought comment just in case.

This is one of my favourite episodes in the whole show, I love the background we get on derek and the structure of how they did it. It’s so good and emotional, I totally don’t cry when I watch this episode.

Destini

If you’re interested in Supernatural, you should watch the a show called Supernatural!

I found it brilliant that they used the same actor Lydia was hallucinating in season 2 to play young Peter here, really cementing it in that Peter was at fault for her craziness all season.

Marissa Brady

This was such an interesting episode. I love getting Hale back stories! Ian Nelson played a terrific young Derek Hale. I found Deucalion's backstory to be heartbreaking. I blame Gerard for all of this. He is responsible for Deucalion and Kate's hatred. He is such an awful person. However, he is a terrific villain! Michael Hogan does such an amazing job playing him. His narration was spellbinding even though he was probably lying though his teeth. Same goes for Peter. Can't wait for the next episode!

Teen Derek was so different back then it’s so weird to see him actually smiling

Ajb

I agree with you though this is the best episode of season 3 in my opinion

I knew it! I said it on the episode 7 reaction that you were going to love this one. This was an information-heavy episode and I knew that was right up your alley. I love this episode because it's all about the unreliable narrator. They say there's 3 sides to a story, side a, side b, and the truth, and that's exactly what this episode showed. We also get a little more information of the characters, how they were about 10 years or so ago, and a glimpse in how what happened there effects how they are now in their "current" lives. We also got insight in the little stories they've mentioned in earlier episodes. This episode made me like Deucalion a lot more as a character. I compare his character to Peter's character a lot, except that Deucalion is a little more bloodthirsty. Peter is more mind games while Deucalion is more physical. I liked the little threat from Scott because like you said, we don't really see that side of Scott ever. It felt like he truly meant that. Definitely one of my favorite episodes of the season 3a for sure.

Such a good episode. You mentioned never really being into supernaturals, but would you consider watching Buffy, after your brother is done. I could easily watch it another round, but this time with you ^^.

Lucile Byrd

I know your brother already reacted to them, but you so need to react to the HP movies
