Hell yes. Been waiting for this one.

SweetSummit

Damn you drop this when Marvel's Avengers is 97% downloaded. Dilemma. This or that............this.

Andrea

Here we go!

Steven, after you've finished this multi-parter (or after the season) I would really love for you to seek out the 1978 counterpart to this story, In 1978 it's a two-parter called "The Living Legend" staring Lloyd Bridges as Commander Cain. It's a really well-told story even back then and you get a great feel on how different these two shows are in their ages.

DJ Doena

If you've ever watched Star Trek: The Next Generation, the actress playing Cain is Michelle Forbes who on Next Gen played Ro Laren who was basically the template for Deep Space Nine's Major Kira.

Terri

Yes!! I just joined last month specifically because of this show. Hardly anyone reacts to it and it's so perfect for that IMO. I do like a few other shows you react to, but this is the one that I needed to see the entire reaction! Glad to see another episode!

Andrea

A good thing to remember when watching this show: There are 12 Cylon models. So our group wasn't suspicious of the Pegasus crew because, based on what they know, a group of over 200 different people can't all be Cylons. "I wanna see the shit THEY went through!" Good news: You can! They made a movie about it. It's called "Battlestar Galactica: Razor." I definitely recommend checking it out. I think it originally aired in between Seasons 3 & 4, though, so you might want to wait until then to watch in the intended order.

SweetSummit

Yeah Andrea I wanted to mention that to him. Razor is great but since it's technically integrated into the story in its syndication (A two or three parter I believe) he'll get to it after season 3. He's got a long way to go but I'm staying here for that entire time as long as he's still enjoying it. As for me, this is probably in my top three episodes of BSG. I love the design of the Pegasus, how it looks sleeker, newer and bigger than the Galactica, as it should, since it's newer. And seeing Michelle Forbes back in sci fi after her wonderful stint in TNG is also great for me. I love the actress. Also yes Lieutenant Thorne needed to die for his 'treatment' of Cylons. That conveniently placed bolt was....covenient.

Andrea

Oh is it actually integrated into the regular series on streaming (I'm not sure what service he's watching this on)? I thought it was something he'd have to seek out on his own, which is why I brought it up.

J.D.

Also the mom in The Killing, which was a big deal for a couple seasons.

Obviously the fact that they rape cylon prisoners is horrendous, but they don't see them as people, just robots. Those of us who have been watching the show and seen things from the perspective of the Sharons, and even Six, have a different perspective. I don't even think the Pegasus's crew is very different from how Galactica started out. They've simply evolved because they're in a context where they have to interact with civilians, while Pegasus has been a pure military vessel throughout the entire conflict. If put in that situation, where you're all alone against the enemy, it's actually not that surprising that they'd lose much of their capacity for empathy. In that situation, you have to follow orders, and you don't have time for things like civilian trials. There but for the grace of Laura Roslin and company goes Galactica... you'll recall that they actually had a pretty similar "human vs. human" dispute back in season 1 when Adama had her arrested. After that whole series of events, things changed for the fleet. They never did for Pegasus, apparently.

Scarlett Monrow

There is a BSG movie "Razor' that gives more background on Pegasus and Cain. Will you watch it and when (after the series or after season 2 - that when it was made to be watched)?

Janeka Rector

I think Steven should watch Razor in the order it originally aired, after season 3. From an interview with exec. Producer Rob D. Moore, : "the events set up in that story will then pay off in season 4."

DJ Doena

"The Humans are as much the monsters as the Cylons." Yes that's basically the essence of the show. Then you (Steven) ask if the Pegasus also has civilian ships in tow. Does Admiral Cain really look like she would burden herself with "useless" civilians? What can be inferred but hasn't been shown yet side by side is that the Pegasus is larger than the Galactica. She's from the latest line of battlestars. Remember in the pilot / mini series, that the Galactica was supposed to be decommissioned and become a museum. The Galactica is from the first Cylon war and over 40 years old. The different reasons that these ships survived the initial attack is that Adama didn't allow networked computer systems (explained in the pilot) and that Pegasus was being repaired and the network was down (explained in this episode). But in effect it's like putting the US aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (commissioned 1961) against the USS Gerald R. Ford (commissioned 2017). The Enterprise will make her name proud and put up a good fight, but she's still the underdog against the modern class of carriers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(CVN-65) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Gerald_R._Ford

DJ Doena

As for the Pegasus crew being a bunch of a-holes: When your commanding officer (CO) executes her executing officer (XO) everyone falls in line lest they want to be the next on the chopping block. It also creates an atmosphere where anything goes that gets the job done. This naturally brings the most ruthless people to the top. The real-world parallels are obviously the Nazis and the Third Reich where people like Dr. Mengele and Rudolf Lange could thrive . "In November 1941 Lange was involved in the planning and carrying out the murder of 24,000 Latvian Jews from the Riga ghetto which occurred on 30 November and 8 December 1941." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_Lange#Mass_murder_in_Latvia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josef_Mengele

Stephanie Bedworth

That's what I always tell people when they are thinking of watching this show. It's as much of a human drama as it is a scifi drama, if not more so.

Daniel R

This episode is incredible. Admiral Cain and her crew definitely show you the dark side of humanity. Never thought you would feel sympathy for a toaster but the show manages to show you all sides and it's amazing

Terri

Also...Admiral Cain probably looks familiar to you because she was also on Prison Break playing one of the "bad guys" that was setting up Lincoln in The Company.
