Johnathan Gilbert was able to write about his own death in that journal because he had a ring like Alaric’s that brought him back from the dead lol

all of the unexpected twists make this episode a 9 imo. this show also does a good job of applying the rules of their lore to every situation and this episode definitely showcases that. it sets up a lot of the vampire rules that become important throughout the series.
