I think the overall consensus surrounding this season pretty much lines up with your feelings. It's generally considered the weakest installment of the whole series. But it's not entirely the showrunners' faults. This was the first season on the CW (when UPN and WB merged), and this show was very much in danger of not making the leap to the new network. In order to save the show and get a shot on the new network, the network execs demanded some changes to better fit their "brand." The top among them was that they were not allowed to have a season-long story arc, because they wanted the show to be more accessible to new viewers. They also wanted a new love interest besides Logan. I'd also imagine the change in general aesthetic was due to network notes as well. So yes, I think you're right in that it was basically a different show, because The CW wanted a different show. Also, Veronica didn't release all those secrets because she realized these are the darkest (life-ruining, career destroying) secrets of some of the most powerful people in the world, and she would truly be kicking the hornets nest and most likely ruining her own life and potentially those of everyone she cares about if she exposed them. She probably felt like she'd done enough damage without putting herself (and others) in more danger. They did treat this as a series finale, even though they weren't sure it was, and had a pitch for a S4 that was ultimately not picked up. Looking forward to your reactions to the movie (which yes, comes next) and S4!

Imagine how the fans felt when we were given this finale back in 2007 with no hope at the time for a continuation lol I remember sitting on my floor watching this episode air and I was just left with no closure and sadness. I completely agree that the castle storyline should have been a whole season plot line. In my opinion, Veronica decided to not use all of the info found on the hard drive because for her, her main focus was just trying to clear her and her father's name. By handing over the info to Nish, that is enough to take care of all of that I guess lol I don't think bringing in the Kanes was so random. If the castle recruits all notable men, then Jake Kane really does fit into that category. I like the inclusion of some old faces for the finale. I 100% would have loved to see more storyline with her exploring the murder that was heard on the video. Excited to see your reaction to the movie!

They left the finale without closure because they wanted the fans to fight for a 4th season. They did, but it wasn't enough ^^ so they fund the film all by themself : a kickstater was launghed for $2 million and it reached $5,7 million instead ! https://www.cnbc.com/2014/03/12/kickstarter-funding-brings-veronica-mars-movie-to-life.html

They were hoping for a series 4 at the time, there was kind of hope. They produced a short teaser pilot for it to get the network to agree, but failed to get the go ahead. It was set years after the end of series 3.

Do you understand how secret societies work? Rich, powerful, connected people who are highly motivated to do whatever it takes to keep their secrets and their very comfortable lives. That's backing Gori. Also, Gori has a mob family that isn't opposed to making people disappear. More than enough reason for Veronica to steer clear. To ensure she stays alive. But, I noticed she had no problem giving Nish the names. So now Nish has the bullseye on her back. As for Jake Kane, he's not a head honcho. He's an elder member of the Castle, yes. But, more middle to upper management level. (To put it in business terms)

Please check out the pilot for the fouthseason before watching the movie!!!!!! It is somewhat important! It is on youtube!

Are you talking about the season 4 teaser from the season 3 dvd?

Dude... i feel you. Like someone said above, imagine how we felt when they ended it like that back then. I mean i liked the episode but as a finale?? As a series finale?? Dude i was gutted. Anyway season 3 was a misfire due to studio interference. Curious seeing you react to the movie next.

I think most of us agree with your frustration. VM is one of my favorite TV shows of all time, but I really mean S1-2. I barely consider S3 to be canon lol. Just to name a few issues, they departed from a lot of the smart campiness that made the show so unique and special, teased but didn't explore several interesting potential storylines and character developments, and replaced Veronica and Logan's epic romance with utterly vanilla characters that never earned emotional investment (Parker & Piz). There are some great lines/moments of course, but it's disjointed, and no plot payoffs like we saw in S1-2. BUT all that said, it doesn't take away from the fact that Seasons 1 & 2 are literally some of the best television OF ALL TIME, including some of the best season openers/closers, characters and dialogue OF ALL TIME.
