Diogo's Uncle Mateo opened his helmet because he had to remove a wire inside the helmet that was shorting out and sparking. This scene is one that I love because it accurately shows conditions in space instead of using the common misconceptions of TV and movies. Mateo didn't hold his breath - that would cause your lungs to vent explosively in a vacuum. Instead, he was slowly exhaling the whole time to let the pressure difference expel air from his lungs. That would be easily survivable for a few seconds, which is all he needed. I love the fact that they depict space travel so accurately - just like the "flip and burn" technique of accelerating the ships, instead of showing ships that behave like airplanes.
