it actually happened a lot,when these occupied countries were being liberated,revenge killings and abandonment became pretty frequent .. any one considered to be working with or sleeping with the enemy were treated as traitors. yea its kind of unfortunate. . but inevitable given these situations

They are making fun of the Lt. by calling him General Patton. Patton had a reputation of doing some really dumb things like walking out by yourself in front of the troops.

Yes through most of Europe once Germany invaded one of the ways to keep your family safe and feed was to work for them (the men) or date and sleep with them (the women), once liberated those people were considered collaborators, traitors. Men and women could often be killed for it, officially. And mobs would often take justice into their own hands.

I know the intro is long and it makes sense to skip, but you should watch the whole thing before episode 10, really hits home with all of the footage of what they went through. Also, Episode 5 is directed by Tom Hanks.
