Remember, Claire was supposedly raped after attending the Pi Sig haunted house. So, the purpose of the fake rape was to implicate the Pi Sigs and get them shut down or booted from Hearst. Also, it wasn't an electric razor in Mercer's room. It was hair clippers. You would definitely not want to try shaving your face with those.
