I don't think it was the editing. I think it was the copy of the episode that you were watching, cause I don't remember that Malcolm talking thing in the original.

whoa yeah I saw that and was like wtf but I never noticed it before and it's one of my most rewatched episodes

Hey, the reason for the bad editing is the 16/9 ratio, originally the episodes were broadcasted on TV in 4/3 ratio, but for the DVD release they removed the crop, causing many mistakes. Unfortunately, the only HD version is that one, so maybe you can crop the episodes yourself ? (sorry for bad english, greetings from France)
