All of the handmaids were chosen because they were all women who've had healthy babies in the past. Their only function in the society of Gilead is to have children for the commanders and their wives. After having a baby, the handmaid is moved to a new house and commander to repeat the whole process. The thing with the cookie, I don't think June wanted it, at all. She felt obligated to take it though because if she didn't, she would appear to be ungrateful for this thing they are offering her and Serena would make her pay for that later at home.

Also the reason scrabble was such a big deal is because women are not allowed to read in the society.

Oh and don’t worry! You are going to get lots more flashbacks and start to see a whole timeline of how everything played out, the first few episodes are rough but it gets better I promise!

1) 19:27 - women are not treated like garbage. Some of them are so valuable that their rights and identities are stripped away, so they can be used for the betterment of society. (Oh so Gilead claims). 2) 13:42 - that moment is truly terrifying. For so many people to stand at the hospital day and night and pray for any healthy child, imagine how bad the birthrate had to get. 3) 29:40 the book made an interesting point, that before Gilead the children of any ages are never seen outside alone, only with adults or on guarded buses to school, because kidnappings where rampant. 4) 22:45 June didn't want the cookie, because it made her sick to take anything from people that rape her and then call her whore.
