It has taken me a long time and much discussion with other fans to figure out the meaning of the light. But, basically, Dexter realizes in that instant that Lila does what she has to do to get what she wants. She got the light fixed by braking her landlords light. What else will she do to get what she wants?

Dexter sets up Doakes not just to protect himself but also Camilla. Writers softening the blow. Dexter could just kill Doakes because the first rule of the code is "don't get caught". But he didn't.

Remember, Lila burned her drug dealers house down. This isn't a total surprise that she is crazy. Love watching with you! It gets so good!

Great reaction and thoughts after the episode! A few things. The first rule of Dexter is to not get caught. This circumvents the second rule of only killing those that are worthy and proving beyond a doubt they are guilty. Dexter is no hero. He is a serial killer with no feelings and so will do things us normal folk will not approve of. It's not out of character for Dexter to solve problems or to "cheat" on Rita. Being a serial killer he has no conscience about these things as he only lives in the moment. Doakes causing a problem. Solve it, even if it means making an innocent man suffer for 48 hours. Lila has understood Dexters needs without realizing it has nothing to do with drugs. Dexter was incapable of properly explaining how Rita's ex had heroin on hand and basically tripped over his own lie since it was all done on impulse to begin with. Something Dexter will do as it's a part of the flaw of being a psychopath. Look forward to the next Dexter reaction! It is definitely one of my favorite shows.

I think we’re seeing the self preservation side of Dexter in terms of this unexpected behavior you’re talking about. I think the manifesto was ideal, for dexter, to throw people off his scent, and I think he finally came to terms with Doakes being on to him.. Doakes becomes even more convinced he’s hiding something because of a lack of paper trail, and Dexter is not able to defend it.. So, he knows he’s got himself in a corner. Because if that, he admits as much as having something to hide, gets a verbal lick in, before sabotaging him off his job (the head butt and walking away bit).

I think we see glimpses of him looking back at something it retrospect and have feelings about it. I think he even has feelings in the moment- it’s just they’re very subtle compared to other people. I think he’s had this facade up for so long, he doesn’t realize it.

This episode was fucking dope, and this was a fun reaction! That head butt scene makes me loose it on rewatches

Lila has been crazy from the start. Remember the jeep ride and running over the hitching post, stealing the windchimes? I wasn't surprised at all because its easy to see she is obsessed with Dexter. Yes, Dexter is doing things out of character but it is because of Lila's enfluence. His voiceover at the school says he is confused. Lila is helping him get "clean" but being at the school with Rita and her kids is the only time he has actually FELT clean. Meanwhile, Lila apparently will do anything to keep him. The spiderweb on Dexter's back in the first scene sets the stage for Lila's craziness and evil enfluence. And he headbutted Doakes because he wanted Doakes to go off on him in public. Doakes is obviously very strong and the headbutt gave Dexter the element of surprise. It was also something that Dexter knew would make Doakes VERY mad.

The next 5 episodes are epic. I can hardly wait!
