"I'm Buffy. The Vampire Slayer. And you are?" Most badass Buffy moment ever. 😎😎

Robin Gibbons

That one-take shot in the school always impresses me. I have watched it so many times and it's just flawless. The timing and acting is as good as if it was cut in 10 different shots.

Yeah, I loved everything surrounding the plot centered around Buffy in LA (That’s where she was). I think they’re having to rush this arc of Buffy because of school starting and then trying to get her back in before it’s too late. Buffy skipping a grade, or even a semester? Eh..

(When I say everything surrounding, I mean everything except!)

Wondering if it was network interference/directives - "you can't separate Buffy from the main cast more than one episode." You are right in that a greater exploration of Buffy's despair/isolation over 2-3 episodes would have been better. But this was the 90's :(

I think it must've been. They used to put all sorts of restrictions on shows like that back then. But, we're also meant to consider the fact that it's been 3 months, and even thought we didn't see it, they still want us to feel the time lapse. However, because we only see it for one episode, it's kind of hard to get emotionally attached to the story imo.

For some reason Dropbox can barely handle 720p but Onehub could easily stream 1080p. So I really hope for Onehub. Though I would also hope Patreon had support that actually would do something, same issue with login has been 6 months, and I have sent 3 times mail but no reply or fixes. I love the idea behind Patreon, but I would prefer them taking bigger cut and have some support and better frameworks. I have never seen more wasteful framework than this. OK, I just had to get this out of my chest.

Sorry that DropBox does not work well for you. I am still debating if I want to make the switch. It's a lot of work and a lot more expensive monthly so I have to see how many are having problems with it.

I preferred season 2's opening episode to this one but overall it wasn't bad and I agree it felt a little rushed her coming back to Sunnydale but I'm kind of glad they didn't stretch it out too much as I love seeing the gang together

This episode needs to be rewatched to really be understood and appreciated. It took me a long time to appreciate this episode. This requires different way of looking the episode. Still this could have been done so much better, but I love what they actually tried to tell us, and I like how this episode woke Buffy to see her situation and made her change her path by returning home.

I agree that it should have been a two parter to better explore the arc. At the start Buffy is trying to escape her destiny, from herself, from the choices she had to make as the slayer. It’s one of the reason why she choose to be Anne (other than being less conspicuous). I like that there’s a prosaic reason for the name, but also a symbolic one as evident by the episode title. By the end, she realizes that she cannot escape her destiny, we have the self affirming scene “I’m Buffy, the vampire slayer. And you are? That’s why she decides to come back. She is Buffy again and Lily, after her second encounter with the slayer, is on a path to self reliance and on her ever evolving journey decides that she will adopt Anne as a name as well as a persona. Again the symbolism of the name. I don’t think that Joss changed his mind about the story he wanted to tell, it felt very deliberate to me. Story wise they had to make her stay in the “hell dimension” as short as possible, otherwise Buffy would have aged too much.

I swear man if I could I would Green Light Passion of the Nerd. It would be really cool to see this guy react to the episode guides after experiencing the show!

I enjoyed the episode :) Thank you!

I like the concept of this episode better than the execution. Buffy, alone, away from everything she knows, trying to cope with life after being kicked out of her house, her school, and killing her boyfriend... it's intriguing. But I agree with you... the physical manifestation of the metaphorical "you have no one" concept falls on the weak side. It's cool she realizes she needs to be Buffy in order to keep the world safe, but I would've liked to have seen her struggle more, and gotten a deeper look at the previous 3 months of being alone rather than just the final moments where she gets over it. The journey would've been more interesting than the solution imo. But alas, I've always assumed this was the network wanting to keep the cast together, and/or an issue with filming locations and being off set.

I liked this as an opener for the season... and i really like the season as a whole. Some really incredible episodes and moments... So excited. Watching this bugged me, for the first time i noticed how blatantly Buffy's shoes change in those end scenes hahaha. I agree with everyone's comments though, I always wish they would have done this over 2-3 episodes, show us her pain and loneliness and everything. The bad guy was terrible, but i just look at the metaphor of how Buffy is feeling, and this bad guy and his dimension being the physical manifestation of it. (He even says something along those lines). I also love Lily coming back, and the several call backs to previous episodes and seasons. Everything matters, every choice has consequences, or something that comes out of it, for better or worse. I love that about this show as a whole. But yeah... this season will ultimately blow you away by the end.

I have always loved this episode from the first night it aired. Buffy's "I don't even know what a tea cozy is, but I want one" line always makes me smile. Ken' s "What is hell but the absence of hope" speech kicks me in the gut every time I hear it. I find it deeply profound. The exploration of teenage runaway culture in LA and the predators that prey on them. It's deep when you really look at it . This show and this episode are so much more than just entertainment.

Hunter McKinney

This episode was less about the monster of the week and more about themes of taking of yourself and societal reflection.

Katherine Thoreson

Oh man...don't pay too close attention to her shoes ever. They change a lot in a lot of different fight scenes in episodes throughout the series. These are the things you start to notice after watching the series several times, though. There's an ep, I believe in season 5, where a flap on a shirt Buffy is wearing goes from being flipped up to flipped down every time the camera angle changes that I can't unsee. lol

Robin Gibbons

Did I miss a Buffy episode anyone? Sometimes they don't show up for me on the general patreon page, but I can't find one since this ep.

GeekedOutNation

No you have not missed any. Allergies kicked my ass so I got behind on a few shows. Buffy Should Go Up Tomorrow.

About the high school opening scene? it is a single shot. If you ever listen to the audio commentary from the DVD Joss Whedon said he did that on purpose to show the contrast with what was going with the Scoobies(How they felt happy and alive) and Buffy(unhappy and just dead inside).
