Very surprised at how high RRR ranked. It’s a very fun movie, but it’s also VERY dumb. I never imagined people here would rate it this highly.

You know what else is VERY dumb? Some Like It Hot. That doesn’t seem as disqualifying to me as it evidently does to you.

Well, that’s two very different kind of dumb… I don’t feel like silliness is an automatic disqualifier, but I’m still surprised at the love RRR gets in critics circles. I had a good time with the film, but I still put it in the same category as the Fast and Furious franchise. And as much as I love some of those movies, I’d be pretty surprised to see them Skandies finalists.

Same category, much stronger execution (in the opinion of many, at least). I doubt Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome would have made a hypothetical '85 Skandies roster; Fury Road was among our top five films of the decade. And that's the same director! (Unless you want to blame it all on Ogilvie.)

The puzzling critical darling for me is not RRR (dumb action movie with a singular vision that constantly surprises) but MAVERICK (dumb action movie that hits every single expected beat dutifully and competently).

Mine is EEAaO. It was refreshing to see it not crack the top 20 here, though I’m surprised Hsu placed so high.

Maverick: "Oh my god, this Bob Evans meatloaf is incredible compared to the plates of shit I've been eating for years."

I think RRR might even be the first Indian movie ever to crack the Top 20, never mind the first "nominee." Pretty sure LAGAAN didn't and nothing else is even coming to mind. (Where is Encyclopedia Swen?)
