I have a theory that the humans did some experimenting on Chui, like giving him some drug to make him more 'intelligent' than normal leopards. And now they are making sure that Chui is safe by following him using his collar. So when the humans saw Chui with lions and hyenas they intervene to make sure they don't harm him. That is were the 'bad luck' is coming from. But that is just a theory. :

Ok, let me see if I can say this correctly. In the last chapter, when Maat chased Mosi to Faida’s place, she spoke to Faida saying that she hoped life treated her well since they last met (which is what’s been going down these last few pages). Makes me wonder if Maat is saying that because she and her pride understand that they were pawns to Chui’s plans in getting back at Faida. It’s interesting because I know the lions haven’t been the sharpest tools in the shed, their reason for attacking the hyenas now is proof of that. I can tell that Faida can look past the tragic loss of her cubs, knowing Chui’s at fault for manipulating the lions into doing his bid.

It seems to be something to do with Chui’s tracking collar. The humans were checking on him and for whatever reason decided to intervene. Whether it the lion’s attack timing was planned or a coincidence is unclear.
