Commonwealth, Restoration, Glorious Revolution: we complete England’s cycle of political instability and, with a little help from our old friends the Dutch, birth a new order into the world.

This is the end of the narrative portion of our series, thank you all so much for listening. But fear not: There’s more Hell to come. We have seven (7) bonus episodes coming up featuring interviews with guest experts on specific thematic topics we wanted to dive into more. I fucking did it !

Fap

I am first!

Erik Bourre

Subbed to the patreon for the first time for this series. Extremely worth it fellas!! Thanks so much for all the hard work.

Nikitas Fudukos

Great but when are you making the soundtrack available?

Eoin Donnelly

RE Cromwellian purge- check out The Irish of Montserrat for some wild modern day accents https://youtube.com/watch?v=PzxRuSh4bXo&feature=shares

James Cook

Beautiful, just absolutely beautiful! "Gif of guy in movie theatre clapping in black and white"

J Vladcliff

Fantastic series guys. I feel like I learned a lot.

C. Ries

Orange you glad I’m not Catholic?

NYCM&AHole

“Judgment day is inevitable” - the governator in T3

Gubriel

So happy Matt said on the last stream that maybe the Spanish Civil War will be the next series - my family was tied into that war very closely and I think it's just a generally fascinating topic.

Ed Goddard

Thank you for creating this excellent series. Really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the bonus episodes. Also.. greetings from Huntingdon, England

Robert Mehling

Bravo, what a great series!

Michael Ehrenreich

A series on the 1848 revolutions would rock

Russell Sugden

If there was one thing I learned in middle school in Leeds, it was the importance of the Battle of Leeds in 1643, on which the history of the whole human race turned…and you skipped it 500 guys slugging it out in the Main Street of town and that decided the whole of history thereafter. Surely worth a mention? 😉

Robert Armstrong

Goddamn, Chris, that ending hit HARD.

Bryan Jennings

Fantastic series. Chris's philosophical ending of why they did this series paired perfectly with Matt's explanation of how to understand capitalism rise you have to look so much further afield than just the place it eventually manifested. Also serious respect the music for this series, they really made a harpsichord go hard.

JMB

Something special this series. Really enjoyed it. Every episode is worth a relisten. It's so dense, every single image has so many things going on.

Jammy Cooks

I could cry. Love both of you, love this series.

JD

Really blew my hair back

Nixper

Well done fellas

Scert

Hey chapo, you've made something you should be proud of. This has been an amazing series. Please continue to make series like this in the future. Your research and commentary are incredibly digestible. I've been week to week for the next episode. Great, great work.

A Witherspoon

Great series! I would pay extra to get more content like this and less movie filler.

Degrassi Knoll

Listening from my hollowed out Oak tree. A stellar episode capping off a stellar series. I've actually listened to every episode with my Dad, who is *very* different politically, but weve found a nice common ground in this series. THANK YOU- this has been equal parts informative and entertaining. Chris gets extra points for the EXCELLENT production, but professor Matt was a star as always. Looking forward to whatever is on deck..

Alec

To Chris, Matt, and all the supporting cast, you did amazing work on this series!

Alec

Also TIL Royal Oak

jjmm

Great job boys

Steve Joseph

Excellent series guys! well done!

Gubriel

I've shared a lot of Patrick Wyman content with my mom; the family that Pods together goes with God together

Johan Stefonski

Amazing. Can't wait for the bonus eps. Thanks for this beautiful and revolting history.

dingbat44

Finally mentioning the Irish.

NYCM&AHole

Should’ve closed the series with this https://youtu.be/8OyBtMPqpNY

FYI: There's a fictional and royalist-friendly version of the Protectorate and Restoration, By the Sword Divided, all episodes on YouTube. Fun fact, the actor (Peter Jeffrey) who played Oliver Cromwell in that series played Philip II of Spain in an earlier and more famous series, Elizabeth R. The actor has yet another turn at a very religious man, when he plays a tortured and imprisoned preacher sentenced to death in Henry VII Tudor's reign, in the series In the Shadow of the Tower. Honestly, it would be fun to listen to Matt comment through these 1970s-1980s costume dramas.

Tim Mullen

I know this isn’t the last episode, but thanks Matt and Chris for this unreal series. Looking forward to the episodes every week has made my last semester of school bearable

Dylan Schwaegel

Masterfully done. This series perfectly illustrates the value of history as a means of interpreting the present. When we feel overwhelmed by current events and fearful of the future, history can help put everything in context. At best it can inspire hope and action when people see the moment for what it is. Keep up the great work guys. It's been truly enlightening.

Saga

Fantastic series, well done guys! It took me a couple of eps to get my head around it, so I'm tempted to do a replay now that the main eps are out. Hope you do more of this in future.

Rohmer Simpson

This happened to my buddy Eric

Major bit me

Is Cromwell the Protestant Trotsky?

maudlin

So glad you guys mentioned Drogheda in this one (excellent pronunciation btw)! I’ve lived there my whole life and even though the cromwellian conquest was centuries ago, a lot of what happened is still visible in the town. We have a street called scarlet street, because its said that the he killed so many people here that the streets ran red with blood, hence the name. Even though he killed hundreds of people here he gave us a pretty decent tourist trade as a result, so at the end of the day its not all bad

David Wych

This was so sick, thanks boys

James Browning

What a send off Chris. It's always the end of the world and birth of a new one. Excellent series guys. I look forward to what you do next. This has happened before, and it'll happen again. So many instances in this series that parallel our own current state of affairs though through the lens/terms of the times.

Stefan Catinella

Congratulations that was an amazing series. That you both. Is there a place where I can download the main theme? I love it so much!

Christian Kaiser

the last 20 min had me sitting like Nelson seeing Andy Williams

Andrew Cross

This was so dope, Matt going from a pure riffer to working with more scripted content has been good to see

Madeleine Winters

Great series guys, absolutely loved it. I do want to mention that Praise-God Barebones had a son, named If-Christ-Had-Not-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned Barebones, who changed his name to "Nicholas" after the Restoration and became a London property developer and free market economist

Carter Drake

I’m so sad it’s oven already :,(

Isaac Larkin

Hell of an ending, very well done.

Andrew Johnson

I’m really enjoying this series. And he’ll of presidents.

Caz VanDevere

This was so sick. You guys fucking rock. Thank you so much for being awesome and bringing the cleansing firehose of knowledge to the filthy unwashed peasantry.

Dan Anderson

That was a brilliant series and a brilliant ending. I'm not particularly well read, but you guys made it quite accessible. I listened to the last little bit sitting in a nice warm bath, and it was deeply affecting. Thanks guys

skrrt vonnegut

This was a ride, god damn. Where's the ERFURT LATRINE DISASTER easter egg in the interactive atlas though?

Alan

Congratulations, boys. You did a good thing there. The whole series was great and the final summations were truly *mwah!* Looking forward to the bonus eps and beyond! Keep up the good work.

Nimbly Bimbly As FUCK

Bravo on the series fellas! Still hope we get the Thirty Years War version of We Didn't Start the Fire!

Carole Oleniuk

Thank you. A fine example of historically materialist documentary radio programming. May I have some more please.

Shartk

Congratulations. Wonderful series 👍

Adam H.

Very well done. Hell of Presidents was great too. I hope you guys keep doing these. I know Matt is a big Civil War head. I'd love to hear that series.

Donald

Great work guys. Such a great series with a ridiculous amount of information. I'd have to listen to it 3 times just to get a functionable understanding of it.

Tom Sullivan

Congrats Chris and Matt on this incredible series.

Salgarious

Great work yaddy yaddy ya, where can we listen to the soundtrack?

Bobby Frith

great series. compelling storytelling, amazing delivery, amazing soundtrack, so engaging start to finish. y'all have achieved something truly special here with this project, so thank you and congratulations!

Gumbo Pie

The series is so dense yet so enjoyable and plays out like a true mini-series that I know I'll be starting from the beginning again very soon. Amazing replay value and great job!

Jennifer Reft

LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH

calvin kilby

You killed it. I hope you do more of these blowback-style miniseries.

J Fitz

Can't even say what was the best part of this series: the depth of the research, the thematic organization of each episode, the perfectly timed sound effects, the music... bloody masterclass.

Mike Mariano

Still listening but congratulations! The Wilhelm Scream gets me every time.

Tyler Moss

Great series thank you guys

Evan C.

I really hope you guys win some awards for this

Gurjot

Thank you Matt and Chris for the excellent series.

Gurjot

Will you guys also release the music used in the series? The one that was playing when Matt was starting his final analysis rips.

Keenan Nilsen

This is an amazing series, thank you for all of your work

Daniel Kamen

Matt sounds like a 10th grader asked to read paragraph 5 on p. 216 from the textbook for the class.

ClownBabee24

A series on Napoleon... PLEASE

Suckinonachilidawg

I love the theme music. This show was packed with knowledge and good story telling. Two thumbs way up!

Brendan Deery

Excellent work thank you

Sandra

the ascension of England seems like such a deus ex machina, the writers really ran out of ideas

Braedon

Really good shit lads, loved the closing bits from both of you.

Matthew Dunn

Gotta say this was amazing. Chris and Matt’s talks are a 1000 times better than any religious sermon I ever heard. Besides the materialist analysis of the birth of capitalism, it had great little tidbits like how Princess Diana was a descendant of Beer George

Clammy_Damp

Nutted my drawers the second I heard “7 bonus episodes”

Sean Orr

Helluva closing monologue, boys.

Raoul Lundberg

The more recent series The Devil’s Whore (starring Andrea Riseborough, with Michael Fassbender as Rainsborough & Dominic West as Cromwell) is a good leveller-friendly dramatisation.

S

What an absolute ride. Had such a good time listening to this. Gave me that blow back fix I needed but with AP Euro content

Alex Greenberg

Incredible series. Thank you Matt and Chris

Erik Coates

Terrific series! Thank you

Colin McFadzen

Absolutely incredible series guys. Huge shout out to you two and everyone else who helped out. Very much looking forward to the bonus content

Bill Crotts

Thanks so much guys. Hope there will be more of this type of stuff but no pressure. Hell on Earth was worth several years of my Patreon money

MinkL0af

I would implore anyone who listened to this episode to go watch the 2020 animated feature Wolfwalkers. It is a very kid-friendly fantasy movie that takes place in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1650. It gives a really thorough and satisfying depiction of the social order and characters one would actually encounter in one of these major Cromwellian Irish settlements of the time, complete with an arch-villainous Lord Protector, completely consumed with a fanatical and nearly incoherent project of Godly duty, acting as the antagonist. The politics of the movie are simple and clear but also powerful and righteous. Run, don't walk, etc.

Drew Middleton

This was so good. Thank you all so much for making this 🙏

Xio Dio

7 bonus episode, thank Allah I was so sad to reach the end. This series is fantastic!

James Wallace

What an amazing history podcast. Never hard to follow. Entertaining as hell and illuminating things I never knew about the origins of capital and how that relates to us even now.

Caelan McCracken

Phenomenal series. Whatever the path for Chapo holds, i hope that these become a regular occurrence or permanent spinoff. Now tell me about the Spanish Civil War!

fuzz

Yes would love to hear Spanish revolutionary history expounded on

Andrew Argraves

Fantastic job, a dence, coherent, and unique podcast that will stand the test of time. Can't wait for more.

Jesse DeStasio

Seems a little suss you haven't had a single guest on that lived during the 30 years war....

Adam Brennan

Excellent series, tyvm!

Mark Niziolek

Those monologues at the end were so good. Excellent work fellas.

Phil Gushulak

Fuck you guys! Thanks for the bonus episodes! Looking forward to re listen to the whole series again.

Peter Sullivan

@ 53:40 min mark Will says “the great Mel Gibson” when he meant Mel Brooks. Both are “great” depending on which ways you look but a funny slip up nonetheless

etienne

that's a joke. they meant to say mel gibson because mel gibson is antisemitic and mel brooks is jewish. they riffed on it for 5 minutes afterwards

SlowTrickle

Fuck that was good

Michael Dobson

Great summation at the ending!

PJ Martinez

An absolute masterpiece gentlemen! I needed to hear that ending.

Yossarian

Really, really fucking good guys. Amazingly good, enlightening on things I thought I knew and I learned a tonne I didn't . My single criticism - not even a snippet of kurious oranj around the glorious revolution as a fall fan, Chris?? Come on man! Get it together, Jack

Hayley

nothing is written

Patrick Holt

Just a point of information. It didn't require the postwar US hegemony to force the whole world to be capitalist. That had already been achieved by European imperialism, and especially by the British Empire as the most widespread and proactive variant. See Imperialism Pioneer of Capitalism by Bill Warren. What the US has been doing since taking over the gig of global imperialism as a whole has been preventing countries escaping from capitalism, and wherever possible forcing escapees back into the prison of private property, market relations, and national level dictatorships to prevent democracy and its potential to enable further bouts of socialism.

Daniel Baylor

Chris I’m so god damn impressed by your work on this series. You’ve heard it already but this really was a fantastic, epic journey. My thanks to you, Matt and everyone who had their hand in this project

Yoopup

Great series and i'm looking forward to the addendums! Gotta admit though, it is jarring how scripted Matt sounded. Nonetheless, an absoute fantastic listen 👏

Scot Forsythe

Banger outro gave me chils❤️

Jason Olaru-Hagen

You can do a game of Eu4 as England where the 5th Monarchists take over. It’s really rare and hard to make that happen, but it creates probably the most uniquely powerful but also challenging form of government in the game
