We spend the majority of this episode discussing the Chesa Boudin recall, liberal views on crime, homelessness, housing and the reality of bad vibes in urban politics. We also look at Nellie Bowles’ piece in the Atlantic declaring San Francisco a “failed city”. Also: Amy Coney Barrett Catholic sex cult, Nexium & online media drama.

I hate to point this out but nyc has been on a building spree since 2015 to “significantly increase affordable housing options.” Yes same city that, as you pointed out, rents are now so high realtors won’t let you see an apartment unless you can prove you’re rich enough. De Blasio issued twice as many permits the first year in office as Bloomberg ever did. And all that this construction sprawl has done is give developers 100% tax abatement incentives and INCREASED rents and prices. So it seems like the argument that we need more inventory really only benefits the developers, the politicians and the wealthy (some of whom don’t even live in New York) to use the city as a piggy bank. Not sure “more inventory” is actually helping anyone who isn’t already rich.

“In May of 2014, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced details of his ten-year, $41 billion plan to build and/or preserve 200,000 units of affordable housing. “Housing New York: A Five-Borough, Ten-Year Plan” projected that 60% of the units would be preservations, and 40% would be new construction. The majority, 58%, were slated for “low-income” residents (defined at the plan’s inception as $42,000- $67,000 for a family of four), with 22% geared for residents making more than this amount, and 20% for residents making less than this amount.8 That plan has now been modified and expanded. In “Housing New York 2.0,” released in November of 2017, the de Blasio administration outlined a plan to complete the promised 200,000 units of housing two years ahead of schedule, and add another 100,000 units to the goal, for a total of 300,000 affordable units by 2026. The new guidelines call for 55.5% to be affordable for “low- income” families making between 51% and 80% of Area Median Income (as of FY 2020 $51,200-$81,920 for a family of three), with 19.5% geared toward residents making more than this amount, and 25.0% for residents making less than this amount.”

I didn't know who Nellie Bowles was. I read her Atlantic essay and looked her up. I discovered she is married to Bari Weiss. Of fucking course she is married to Bari Weiss. The perspective in the Atlantic essay reads like something Bari Weiss would say on Bill Maher.

It’s telling that the recall campaign success party happened in the Marina. I’d like to see a breakdown of who voted for it based on neighborhood.

Will was on point it seems: "Jacob Bacharach(?) made this point, in order to advance the onslaught of the cultural right, liberals will choose smallest groups possible and throw them to the wolves, such as the unhoused or trans people.." https://www.foxnews.com/politics/hillary-clinton-transgender-debate-should-not-be-priority-for-dems

Do you think they might have been cucked at some point, perhaps causing cringe to become a "whole thing"?
