German trenches were actually commonly that well constructed, the Entente often commented on that exact thing when they managed to take them -- something to the tune of "We just spent 5 months in a glorified sewage pit, and these guys have toilets, electricity, and beds??" There are a variety of factors that made this the case, you can find a lot of reading on just how different the average German trench was from those of their enemies, interesting stuff.

Also, this is less interesting, but I'm pretty sure they're actually saying something closer to "motherland" in Japanese, rather than "fatherland" when referring to Marley
