I thought they were watching Prisoner Cell Block H at the start of the episode. The music you hear was often used in that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFIjtHgVh1U

Definitely incidental music used in Prisoner: Cell Block H. Weird how they're supposed to be watching Poirot instead with that music playing, especially as in an earlier episode, Victor is actually watching Prisoner: Cell Block H! Haha!

One of my favourite episodes. Not one of the absolute funniest ones but I love how dark it shows Renwick was prepared to go, and it also combined pathos, tragedy and comedy seamlessly in a way it would continue to do to an even greater extent later on. Renwick's characterisation is marvellous, we see just how compassionate Margaret can be, and we also meet Patrick and Pippa for the first time, which is a big and somewhat pivotal moment for the series as a whole. Next week's is just marvellous and the last episode of series 2 is wonderful for completely different reasons... two really great specials after that and then we're on to the two strongest series of the entire show; series 3 and 4... and it's golden age One Foot in the Grave. 😁🙏

One foot in the grave brewing nicely

Danny

David Renwick giving a nod to the other show he was writing for at the time, Poirot.

TheHigh

this was a little dark Lol! , great episode

Tony Smyth

I don't believe it!! There's actually something that's LESS funny and more predictable than Red Dwarf??? I can't watch it. I'd be too embarrassed if I got caught... But that's just MY opinion

Austin Stratton

Josh, Victor said 'It's bloody Jockey Wilson, we're watching the darts now' not the dance lol

Patrick and Pippa add a new dimension to this show and become regulars from the next series onwards. This is just the start of the strained neighbourly relationship!

Does it get better than this? I've been giving it a chance after being confounded by how good some of the voted-for shows - shows I thought were going to be disastrous choices for this channel - have actually turned out to be, but so far it's been dismal. I can't see where its reputation among patreons comes from. I can understand relaxing into it maybe, growing to like the characters, a bit like with Red Dwarf, but so far the laughs are so sparse and the setups for some of the zany antics are staggeringly stupid. Is there a point where it gets into its groove?

Saul

I have to agree with the...temperamentally changeable...mr Smyth here. It's a hop and a leap from here to Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, and then we might as well call the whole thing off.

If you don't like it by now I can't see you ever liking it, it's probably just not for you.

Saul

To someone called 'Raindog', who left a spectacularly nasty, passive aggressive little comment that came up in my inbox, then spinelessly deleted it from this page: you sound like an absolute plum and I'm glad I've never had to speak to you here before. Other than that, cheerio :)

Pkirby422

Lets all chill out people :) It's too early in the morning for these negative waves... Let's all appreciate how beautiful, and righteous this life is !!

About the bomb thing : yep, you've got to remember that during WW2, civillian areas in Britain were regularly bombed by the luftwaffe (we did it to the germans too as the war went on...). For much of the second half of the 20th century, people would sometimes find unexploded bombs in residential areas that had never gone off.

Gary Tamblyn

And it still happens these days. A WWII bomb was found last year in Exeter. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-56226798

Patrick and Pippa! You may recognize Patrick as the original host of Would I Lie To You before Rob Brydon took over, Angus Deaton.

People are allowed to chime in with their opinions about the series which get shown. It's not "whining" to be critical of a series one doesn't care for, especially given that said people seem to be attempting to give the series a fair shake by watching multiple episodes. For the record, I adore One Foot in the Grave but that's beside the point. I suggest that you learn to respect other people's right to express their views on the content they pay to view.

You're a very rude man for telling me to "get fucked". Your ego does not dictate the world. Learn to respect others' right to express their own opinion on shows. If they choose to be critical multiple weeks in a row, that's their right. I love 'One Foot in the Grave' but unlike you, I am not an egocentric asshat and therefore don't get all precious when somebody is critical of a show I like. Grow up.

Z is for Zed

I expected Meldrew in the video, but was surprised to see quite so many in the comment section as well.
